Design A Mexican Living Room

Design a living room inspired by the vibrant colors of Mexican pottery.

Mexican design blends Native American art with Spanish intricacy and flair. Once transformed to mirror Mexican style, your living room will combine earthy tones with bright blues, yellows and reds characteristic of Mexican art. With simple changes to your walls and flooring you will achieve southwestern style in your living room. The style you desire builds a foundation with distressed, aged pieces of furniture and contrasts with bright, bold patterns and colors displayed in art and fabrics. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cover your ceiling and walls in stucco. Clean your surfaces and apply the heavy stucco generously with a trowel. Go back over the area with a stiff brush in swirl motions to achieve your desired texture.

2. Install wood flooring or ceramic tiles. Choose medium colored, thick wood planks for a rustic feel. For a true Mexican hacienda look, order distressed wood from the manufacturer. Choose terra-cotta tile to achieve your authentic Southwestern theme. Throw a brightly patterned area rug over your wood or tile flooring to add charm.

3. Choose sturdy furniture in natural wood tones. Select pieces that look that are detailed and look aged or distressed to fit in with your Mexican design. Decorate your couches and chairs with brightly colored pillows to compliment your area rug. Move your furniture away from the walls to create a more intimate conversation area.

4. Fill your living room with Mexican pottery and art. Display your favorite pieces over the fireplace or on shelves hung above your couches. Hang bold Mexican-inspired art on your walls and pick up the bright colors in your floor-length draperies.
