Start A Christian Nonprofit At Home

Charity is a major part of all Christian religions.

Starting a Christian non-profit organization can be a very rewarding experience. Giving to those less fortunate than yourself is among the highest expressions of your values and life's philosophy. The finer points in the process for starting a Christian non-profit organization will vary greatly from state to state, but registering with the IRS and other larger steps will be the same no matter where you live in the United States.

Instructions

1. Form a group of stake-holders--these are people who have an interest in the organization. Members of your church leadership, members of the community, major donors, and representatives of the communities you will serve are all good candidates.

2. Recruit a board of directors from the group of stake-holders. Find those most interested in the success of the organization and try to get them to meet in a group to talk about what the organization will do. Make sure you're not duplicating services offered by another group.

3. Write a mission statement that describes what the organization will do and why. The statement should be voted on by the board of directors at the first official meeting. Don't forget to give your non-profit a name that describes the organization but doesn't duplicate or mimic that of another group.

4. Draft articles of incorporation and file them with your state. The articles should be approved by the board before being filed.

5. Open a bank account in the name of the organization.

6. Apply for tax exempt status for the organization with your state. You can contact the office of your state's attorney general to find out which agency regulates non-profit organizations.

7. Apply for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS.
