Cabinet Door Styles

Cabinets set the tone for your kitchen decor.

Cabinets are a decorative storage option for any room, but they can also serve as focal points that set the design style for a room, particularly a kitchen. As the face of a cabinet, cabinet doors are the part of a cabinet that grabs your attention. Certain styles of cabinet doors fit best with specific home decor styles. Does this Spark an idea?

Raised Panel Cabinet Doors

A raised panel cabinet door style construction is most often made from hardwood, but wood veneer over plywood and medium-density fiberboard may also be used in some cases. Four stiles, or wood strips, around the perimeter fit together to form the frame for the door. A solid wood panel with the center section cut so that it appears elevated fits into the door frame. You can have the cut edges of the center section edged in a variety of shapes and designs. An arched-style raised panel fits in a French country or traditional kitchen design; straight panel edges fit a contemporary style kitchen.

Recessed Panel Cabinet Doors

Recessed panel cabinet door styles have similar construction to a raised panel door, but the center panel is flat. Four wood strips create the frame for the door, and the flat wood panel fits inside the frame. The profile of the wood frame is thicker than the flat wood panel, so the panel appears recessed. The recessed wood panels on these cabinet doors can dictate the style of a kitchen. For example, use a beadboard panel insert to create a country or casual style kitchen.

Slab Style Cabinet Doors

Slab style cabinet doors are made from one solid piece of wood. Slab doors may have decorative routing around the edges, or the edges may appear smooth and plain. Slab style doors are the simplest and least expensive style of cabinet doors available.

Glass Cabinet Doors

Glass cabinet doors are constructed like the recessed panel cabinet doors with a wood frame made from four joined wood strips. A decorative glass insert fits onto the back of the wood frame. Glass cabinet doors are primarily used on select upper cabinets in a kitchen to add design interest.
