80s Room Makeover

Subdued colors like brown and light pink were also popular in the 1980s.

The 1980s were characterized by overwhelmingly bright colors, catchy slogans, and cartoon characters that have become cultural staples. To redecorate a room in your home 80s-style, dig through the old clothes in your attic for inspiration, or watch a VHS tape chronicling a special time in your life for inspiration on the best hues and decor items to use in the space. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

When it comes to 1980s decorating, the brighter the color, the better. Neon hues like lime green, bright orange, and electric blue will make your '80s-style room especially authentic, e.g. splattering splashes of neon paint on the accent wall, or painting the wall paneling your favorite fluorescent color. Neutral shades combined with brighter tones are indicative of 80s home decor as well. For instance, light and medium gray armchairs and sofas with cobalt blue or bright purple pillows or hot pink curtains against a sandy tan wall are a sophisticated addition to an '80s room.

Furniture

Furniture with funky shapes or a crafty look help to make your 80s-themed room stand out. The arts and craft decor movement was popular during the 1980s, when mission-style furniture, originally common in the early 1900s, began to make a comment. So, a desk made of distressed wood with metal accents or a dark wood farm-style door is accurately indicative of 80s style. Angular furniture, like armchairs or small couches with pointed or curvy tips will give the room a particularly interesting look as well. For a room with a more relaxed or playful feel, neon-colored bean bags are ideal.

Wall Art

Purchase a few posters featuring your favorite cartoon characters from the 1980s like Fat Albert, Rainbow Brite, or The Care Bears. Buy a few gray or black frames to houses the posters in, and adorn the side walls of the room with them. Or, give the room refined 80s taste with reprints from artists who were prominent during the decade, like Mark Tansey or Keith Haring; both artists captured the bold lines and bright hues of the day with a fanciful and timeless twist.

Personal Items

Personalize your 80s space with items direct from the decade-either those that belonged to you, or "artifacts" from older loved ones. For instance, frame your favorite cropped, acid-washed jean jacket and display it on the accent wall, or adorn the top of your dresser with an Etch-a-Sketch and mini My Little Pony toys that you or an older sibling played with as a child. You can also frame or feature some of the jewelry you were during this time period on your wall. For instance, install short pegs on the wall to showcase all the friendship bracelets that were given to you as a kid, or set your large, bamboo or geometric earrings on a canvas and frame the "artwork" for a completely original piece.
