Make A Bench Hook

Make a Bench Hook

A bench hook is a type of jig--a simple woodworking accessory used to hold wood still while working on it. The bench hook can replace clamps to hold wood in place while working with hand tools.

To use a bench hook, place the device on the workbench with the "hook" against the edge of the bench. Wood is held against the stop. Clamps are not needed because the wood is held by pressure.

Instructions

1. Select pieces of scrap to create the bench hook. Size doesn't really matter, use what you have on hand. You can make several of different sizes. For this article, we'll make one that's 8 by 10 inches. Select a flat plywood panel that is 8 inches by 10 inches, or cut it to that size. Use a square or triangle to check that the hook's base is square.

2. Select two fences or battens. These will be slightly shorter than the width of the hook, so if you cut through the bench hook, you will not cut through the thicker "fence." The fence can be made of 1-by-4 inch or any smaller piece of lumber at least 7 inches long.

3. Secure one fence to the short end of the base, lining it up with the edge of the wood and the left-hand side. Use wood glue and a clamp. Check that the wood is square.

4. Flip the base over and secure the second fence to the opposite end. Do this after the fence is dry. Line it up square with the short end and also on the left-hand side.

5. Reinforce the fences with either screws or with dowels. To use dowels, drill through the fences with a bench press and insert dowels of the same dimension as the holes: 3/8-inch holes for a 3/8-inch doll rod.
