What States Have Native American Cave Art

You can find rock art all over the U.S., especially in the Southwest.

Native American cave paintings abound across the U.S. Generally called "rock art," almost every state hosts some form of this historical artwork. The American Southwest contains the most examples because the dry climate preserves the art and prevents it from eroding away. The American Rock Art Research Association provides lists of the best sites in the nation on both private and public lands, and many other preservation groups provide tours and other information.

California

California contains a host of Native American rock art. Examples include the Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park, 11 miles north of Santa Barbara. Another rock art site attributed to the Chumah people can be visited at the Carizo Plain National Monument. In addition, the Little Petroglyph Canyon in Rdigecrest has almost 6,000 examples of Native American rock art.

New Mexico

New Mexico's Petroglyph National Monument holds a large collection of Native American and Hispanic rock art. Close to the city of Albuquerque, the site is more than 700 acres and contains over 100 archeological sites.

Texas

Texas has a large number of different Native American art sites across the state, including the Galloway White Shaman site, the Hueco Tanks, Lewis Canyon and many others. San Antonio's Rock Art Foundation hosts tours to a variety of the sites for donations.

Hawaii

On the north coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve holds more than 1,000 examples of rock art created by Native Hawaiians. This site is close to Holoholokai beach on the Kohala Coast.

Arizona

Like its neighbors in the Southwest, Arizona has many rock art sites. The Coconino National Park oversees the V-Bar-B Ranch Petroglyph site, which is open for visitors. In addition, the Deer Valley Rock Art Center north of Phoenix has self-guided trails to many sites.

Arkansas

Even states outside the American west contain rock art sites. The Arkansas River Valley in Arkansas contains large numbers of painted rock art, especially around Petit Jean Mountain close to Morrilton. The Petit Jean State Park was established partially to protect this art.
