Finish Mission Furniture

Mission furniture is a simple, straight-line furniture style, created in the early 1900s. In response to the curvy and ornate Victorian era, Mission furniture has straight lines and simple designs, and was able to be fabricated by hand. For added durability, antique Mission furniture was constructed of oak, one of the hardest trees and, at one time, found on every corner. Its solid wood construction makes Mission furniture ideal for all rooms from the bedroom to the dining and living rooms. The simple design works in traditional, contemporary and country rooms.

Instructions

1. Clean the furniture to remove any dirt or debris. Mission furniture has a lot of straight lines, so it is important to remove dust from tight areas with corners.

2. Lightly sand the surface to aid the furniture in accepting the stain. Sand lightly; you don't want to round any surfaces and take away from the straight lines of Mission style. Clean to remove dust made while sanding.

3. Apply the stain in the direction of the grain according to the manufacturer's directions on the stain you choose. The stain can be applied with a brush, rag or sponge. Let dry and repeat two to three times more to achieve the desired color.

4. Apply two to three coats of clear-coat polyurethane, lightly sanding between each coat. The polyurethane should also be applied in the direction of the wood grain. If you prefer the natural color of the oak, you can forgo the stain and simply seal the wood with three coats of polyurethane. Prepare the furniture as you would for stain, but skip right to the clear coat application.
