North Carolina's performing arts programs grant a variety of degrees.
Prospective college students hoping to study the performing arts in North Carolina can consider programs at several of the state's top-ranked public and private universities. These programs offer undergraduate majors and minors in a variety of performing arts fields, including drama, music and dance. Some performing arts programs at North Carolina's universities also offer graduate degrees.
Duke University Arts
Duke University offers programs in music, theater and dance. The music department offers an undergraduate major and minor in performance, as well as graduate programs leading toward masters and doctoral degrees in composition, musicology, music theory and performance. All music students have the opportunity to perform with the department's 9 ensembles. The dance department offers undergraduate majors and minors in dance with a focus on performance, choreography and dance history and theory. The Duke theater studies department offers undergraduate majors and minors with classes in acting, directing and dramatic writing. Duke University was ranked 10th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

University of North Carolina Department of Dramatic Art
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill College of Arts and Sciences contains the department of dramatic art. The department offers major and minor courses of study for undergraduates, with an emphasis on acting, theatrical design and production and stage and screen writing. The department also offers three-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree programs for graduate students in professional actor training, costume production and technical production.
All performing arts students at UNC Chapel Hill have the opportunity to participate in theater productions with the school's PlayMakers Repertory Company. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tied for 28th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

University of North Carolina at Asheville
The University of North Carolina at Asheville functions as the state's public liberal arts university. The university's drama department offers an undergraduate major in drama, with an emphasis on acting, directing and theater design and technology.
