1. Consider your local market. If you are living in a depressed area and people are more likely to be getting rid of their own stuff rather than buying yours, selling locally might not be the best option. If, on the other hand, you are in an area filled with expanding business, you might have a built-in market without having to do much else. This isn't a question of right or wrong, but it is important to consider your market before making an attempt to sell.
2. List on Craigslist. One of the best options for getting rid of furniture is your local Craigslist, if you have one. One of the most compelling reasons to use Craigslist is that it's free. There is no listing charge and no commission when you sell. You can also email, phone and text with interested buyers, rather than deal with a stream of lookers. Just be careful to avoid the many Craigslist scams that are out there.
3. Place an ad in the local newspaper. If you don't have a local Craigslist, have no luck with it, or prefer not to use it, you can place an ad in the local newspaper. There's a fee to do this, of course, but the advantage is that you will likely only hear from serious buyers, or those that are at least mostly interested in purchasing what you are selling. You can quickly narrow down your market to just those who will purchase your items. Ask the classified ad salespeople for a suggestions as to the best day to list your office furniture (weekends won't necessarily be best if you are targeting a business crowd).
4. If you have a lot of used office furniture to sell, consider using a liquidator to handle the sale for you. These companies exist in most communities and can handle both the sale and all the advertising and money collection for you. You simply pay a commission to the liquidator and get the rest in profit.
