Reupholster A Mission Chair Seat

Reupholster your mission chair seat

It's easy to reupholster a mission style chair seat. A mission style chair has basic square corners with drop-in seats. The straightforward box style design hides the tuck and folds of the material. Mission style chair seats often have Naugahyde upholstery, which is vinyl with a simulated leather look. Naugahyde is easy to work with as it holds and grips when stretched without any loose threads. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lay the chair upside down and find the seat mounting screws; there should be approximately 2 screws on each side of the bottom, going through braces and into the 3/4-inch plywood seat. Remove all the screws and drop the seat out through the arms of the chair.

2. Lay the seat upside down, and, using the staple puller, remove all the staples holding the old Naugahyde to the plywood. Remove any decorative brads from the front of the seat. Pull the Naugahyde from the seat, but don't remove the foam or deck pad.

3. Lay the old piece of Naugahyde on top the new 24 by 24-inch piece. Cut the new Naugahyde to the same size as the old piece with the scissors. Lay the seat foam side down on top the new piece of Naugahyde.

4. Apply as much downward pressure to the seat bottom as possible using the palm of one hand. With the other hand, stretch up one side of the Naugahyde and bend it over the plywood, pulling it toward the center. Pick up the stapler with the hand you used for pressure, and staple the Naugahyde where you stretched it. Move to the opposite side of the seat, pull up the Naugahyde, bend it over toward the first piece as far as it will go and staple it. Work your way all around the seat with both hands stretching and applying pressure on all four sides.

5. Pull the Naugahyde from each corner diagonally across as far as it will go, pulling out all the slack. Staple the corner. Pull on the opposite corner diagonally, staple it. Do all four corners. All four corners should be pointing across to the opposite corner.

6. Tuck, fold and staple all the loose edges and corners of the Naugahyde on the bottom of the seat, until it is relatively flush across the bottom.

7. Drop the seat back in the chair and screw it back on using the same screw holes and screws. Nail the decorative brass brads back along the front of the seat between the legs.
