Ideas For A Mexican Kitchen

Terracotta and Mexican-style pottery belong in a Mexican-inspired kitchen.

Mexican-style kitchens are known for their warm and welcoming atmosphere, vibrant color and rich textures and finishes. Mexican kitchen designs can range from polished to rustic; the choice is yours. Remedy a boring, lifeless kitchen with designs inspired by Mexico to create an inviting, invigorating space for cooking, eating and entertaining. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

Rich, vibrant color is essential to creating a bold, spicy Mexican kitchen. Incorporate paprika, goldenrod, turquoise, cobalt blue and other high saturation colors into the walls, countertops and accessories throughout the room. Depending on how lively you want the kitchen to be, use large amounts of these colors or just use them sparingly as accents in a mostly neutral room. Natural wood, light earthy greens, white and tan work well as a backdrop for a Mexican color palette. Create a rich background with depth by using a faux finish on the walls that incorporates two or three shades of your chosen color.

Surfaces

Tile is a Mexican-inspired material that can be very striking in a kitchen for flooring, countertops, walls and backsplashes. A terracotta tile floor is traditional and has a grounding effect in the room. Colorful tiled counters or walls lend a fun fiesta atmosphere. Knotty wood is another appropriate choice; wide plank floors and stained wooden doors and trim have a slightly more rustic Mexican flavor. Butcher block counters add warmth to the room and go well with tile and bold color elsewhere in the room. Mission-style furniture and wooden furniture with wrought iron detail complement a Mexican theme.

Accessories

Shop for wrought iron, copper and punched tin decorations and accessories. Punched tin lanterns can be hung over an island, table or breakfast bar. String lights add a festive air and colorful ceramics and Mexican folk art lend authenticity to your kitchen design. Accent the room with brightly colored striped textiles, Talavera (decorative glazed ceramics) and hand-woven baskets.
