Durham North Carolina Middle Charter Schools

Durham Charter Schools encourage Middle School students to excel acdemically and socially.


North Carolina Charter schools operate under the Charter School Act, House Bill 955, are independent of NC public schools and adhere to an academic and financial accountability standard. As of January, 2011 North Carolina is ranked 32 out of 41 in states that have charter schools by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. All NC students who are qualified for public school are eligible to attend a charter school no matter what NC district they live in. Carter Community


Located on West Club Boulevard in Durham, Carter Community serves children from grades K-8. The school opened in 1998 and the Lead Administrator as of February 2011 is Gail Taylor. The curriculum is founded on the North Carolina standard course program of study, as well as developing students' personal and communal economic responsibility. Some of the standard course of study classes for NC Middle School students includes career development, computer and technology skills, arts education, second languages, math, English language arts and science.


Healthy Start Academy


This Charter School opened in 1997 and is managed by Jim McCormick as of February 2011. Children in grades K-8 are part of a rich legacy because Healthy Start Academy is the first established charter school in North Carolina. The Middle School component has two sixth grade divisions, three seventh grade divisions and one eighth grade division. Middle School students attend class from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.


Maureen Joy Charter


Maureen Joy Charter School was established in 1997, and as of February 2011, Alex Quigley is the head administrator. The school is charted to serve grades K-8. Tuition is free; however, the school enforces an application deadline for incoming students. The school's mission is to prepare students to become productive citizens and college graduates. Monday through Thursday school starts at 8:10 a.m. and concludes at 4:10 p.m. On Friday, school begins at 8:10 a.m. and ends at 2:10 p.m. The school selects students through a lottery pool when the applicants exceed the number of available slots. Students are required to wear uniforms and busing is provided. The Middle School averages 23 students per class and features a mentoring program as an elective activity.


Research Triangle Charter Academy


Research Triangle Academy opened in 2000 and is a member of National Heritage Academies. The administrator is Terri Gullick, as of February 2011. The curriculum is college prep based with an ethics module emphasizing honesty, insight, deference and courage. Grooming students for High School, the Middle School program is accentuated with literacy and research based discussions, mathematics analysis and integrated science experiments.
