Decorate A Spanish Bedroom

Perhaps you seek Madrid high-rise sophistication or Barcelona bohemianism. You might prefer the look of crumbling haciendas or rustic countryside villas. Choose your Spanish look and let your imagination run wild with bedroom decor. Integrate Spanish handicrafts and antiques or just use colors, finishes, furnishings and accessories that evoke Spanish style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Gather inspiration. Peruse decor magazines and websites for images of Spanish bedrooms; also look at travel magazines or hotel brochures, which often feature artistically presented bedrooms. Clip out images to keep in an idea folder and jot down ideas in a journal. Famous Spanish art and architecture, such as works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Antoni Gaudi, can also provide inspiration.

2. Use color to establish a Spanish theme in your bedroom. Exposed wooden beams, natural finishes and pieces made of stone and wood have a rustic hacienda look. Moody reds and saffron yellow evoke a Barcelona tapas bar, while bold black and white show Spanish urban minimalism. Deep indigo against yellow, antique white or terracotta recalls artisan tiles that line Spanish colonial gardens, terraces and courtyards.

3. Invest in focal point pieces of furniture that evoke Spanish themes. The bed should anchor the room. Go with a platform style with dark stained wood or a black lacquer finish for an edgy urban look. Low, modular pieces with chrome or steel accents add to the Spanish contemporary look. For Spanish rustic, colonial or hacienda looks, choose a more ornate bed frame. Try a wrought iron frame with a scrolled metal or wooden engraved headboard. Complement the look with solid wooden pieces with natural or distressed finishes. Furnishings may feature artisan details such as hand-painted trim, hammered tin panel insets, wood joinery, oxidized metal hardware, niches or ceramic tile surfaces.

4. Accessorize with Spanish accents. A bold rug featuring an image from a Miro or Picasso painting adds visual pop to the room. Spanish motifs such as bulls, roses, crosses and scrolls look perfect on textiles, wall trim or furniture borders. Adorn a mantel, floating shelf or niche with wrought iron candle holders and simple white pillar candles for classic Spanish elegance.
