Spanish decor draws inspiration from Mother Nature's palette.
Spanish design incorporates classic Spanish style with aspects of French and Italian design, resulting in a marriage of bold and natural elements. Characterized by an open-air feeling, the Spanish-style kitchen provides an area to cook as well as entertain. The kitchen should be filled with a lot of light and decorated with rustic colors. Whether you are designing an Old World kitchen from scratch or redesigning a preexisting kitchen, Spanish elements create a dramatic and welcoming space. You have many options for achieving aged charm without sacrificing modern amenities. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Create a budget. Visit your local home improvement store to get design ideas and price items needed for the room. For a preexisting kitchen an investment of paint, flooring and cabinetry may be adequate to transform your kitchen. Create a layout for your kitchen, carefully considering your daily needs, if you are designing a kitchen from scratch.
2. Choose cabinets with glass doors, or completely remove the doors for an open-air feel. Install lighting within the cabinet to create depth and display colorful pitchers and bowls. Install lighting under the counters adding warmth to your room and creating the illusion of more counter space.
3. Build an island in your kitchen for added counter space and storage. Select an island with a stove-top and an eating area for the central cooking that is so indicative of Spanish design. Hang a wood rack above the island to display copper cooking pots and add to the bold colors of the kitchen.
4. Install wide, wood planks or red clay tiles on the floors. Cover your floors with an antique rug bringing an Old World feel into the kitchen. As an alternative, you can update your flooring in an inexpensive way with peel-and-stick vinyl tiles that create the illusion of natural tiled flooring.
5. Put in a mosaic tile back-splash to mimic a colorful Spanish hacienda. Lay the tile in bold patterns that grab the eye and balance the natural tones in the kitchen. Choose tile with bright blues, golden yellows or deep reds to add pops of color to the surrounding wood cabinets.
