Diy Wooden Missionstyle Curtain Rods

Select a curtain made from a natural material to compliment the mission-style curtain rods you made.

The mission style represents skilled craftsmanship, high-quality hardwoods and simple clean lines. Select a furniture-grade cherry to use for the curtain rod materials. This design features a square rod with geometric finials at the end to evoke the clean lines and simple construction that was common during the period. Modify the length of the rod to fit specific window sizes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure in 1 inch from the end on all four sides of both ends of the cherry board. Mark the measurements.

2. Cut a 14-degree angle with a miter saw from each pencil mark towards the outside end of the board on all four sides of both ends. This will create the rod's finial end detail.

3. Measure in 3 inches from each end of the cherry board on both 2-inch sides of both ends. Mark the measurements with a pencil.

4. Use a router with a 1/2-inch round-over bit to rout a 1/2-inch rounded edge between the pencil marks on the four edges of the board.

5. Sand the curtain rod with fine-grit sandpaper until the surface is completely smooth.

6. Apply a wood finish to the rod. Allow the finish to dry before you continue.

7. Mark a 2-inch square in the center of both 3-inch finial ends. Drive an iron screw into each corner of the 2-inch squares on one 2-inch side of the board. This will be the front face of the curtain rod. The iron screws create a decorative grid that is a common element in mission-style design.
