Decorate With Mission Style Furniture

None other than architect wonder Frank Lloyd Wright is said to be the father of mission-style decorating. True to his character, this style of decorating features furniture that is angular and covered with darkly tinted stain. Elements like stained glass windows and Art Deco sculptures are the staple decorating accessories to complement this simple furniture style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remember your flooring when you’re decorating with this style. Gravitate toward ceramic tile, stone floors or hardwood. These-like the furniture itself-should be made from natural materials. Additionally, if you have hardwood floors, examine its color carefully. Pick a stain color for your furniture that matches. Otherwise, they’ll clash.

2. Choose your large furniture pieces carefully. These will set the tone for the room. Look for wooden mission-style couches with bare armrests and mission-style armchairs. If your dining and living rooms connect, look for a dining set crafted in this style as well.

3. Select natural fibers for the upholstery for this decorative motif. Appropriate choices are linen, cotton and leather. Look for colors that reflect the mission style’s simple character. These include olive green, chocolate brown, deep reds and yellows plus neutral colors like taupe or off-white.

4. Look for decorative pillows to throw on your couch and chairs. Consider the upholstery of the furniture as well as any other existing styles you may have in the room. These small elements are a way to bring flashes of color without it being overpowering.

5. Scour local stores and flea markets for furniture accent pieces like mission-style mirrors, coat racks with storage benches and Art Nouveau prints with vintage oak frames.

6. Bring a little light into the room by selecting lamps that feature mica shades with metal accents. These often feature a sheet of mica with metal frames and geometric designs.

7. Add an art glass screen in front of the fireplace. Many mission-style homes had colored art glass, but this tends to be expensive. Smaller items like a screen allow you to bring this element into the room without spending too much money.
