Create A Victorian Bedroom

Echo the styles of the elegant 1800s in your bedroom.

Transporting your bedroom back a couple of centuries is no easy task. But if you have the time and funds to create one, a Victorian-era bedroom will bring a romantic feel to your home. Search antique stores, estate sales and newspaper listings for Victorian-style furniture. The era's d cor was marked by repeating patterns and color combinations, often including gold. Keep an eye out for furniture and light fixtures with carved or welded designs like vines and spirals. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Creating a Victorian Bedroom

1. Explore photos of old Victorian rooms to familiarize yourself with the color scheme and designs that are associated with the era. Once you have a motif, search for antique, historic or Victorian wallpaper. The wallpaper will tie all elements of the room together because it will surround all the other furnishings.

2. Acquire or make curtains to complement your wallpaper. Usually, Victorian curtains were long, pale and layered. Your curtains should have layers of lace and can be bunched and tied to the sides with cords of decorative rope.

3. Arrange several rugs on the floor. Victorian-era bedrooms did not have carpet, so remove the carpet first if there is any in the room you are decorating. The pattern in the wallpaper can be echoed in the rugs you place on the floor. If you cannot find exact matches, simply find rugs with elements that match, such as leaves or birds similar to those in the wallpaper. Be sure to match the colors.

4. Attach a canopy to the bed. The canopy can be lighter in color to coordinate with the curtains, rather than repeating the pattern in the wallpaper. Stain your bed with a dark finish if it is not already a dark wood. Place a quilt or comforter on the bed; it should match or echo the wallpaper pattern.

5. Stain all wooden bedroom furniture a dark color if they are not already. Attempt to mimic walnut, rosewood or mahogany if your bedroom set is not constructed from these materials. Furnishings should be coordinated, so to coordinate items that cannot be stained such as settees or ottomans. Use blankets or drape linens that match the d cor. The focal point of the room should be the bed.

6. Hang a brass chandelier or use a smaller brass lamp on a dark wooden bedside table for lighting. Do not use tall standing lamps.

Bathroom Ideas For A 1920s Craftsman

Craftsman style bungalows were built in California before becoming common in other areas.

By 1920, Craftsman bungalows had been a favorite architectural style in the U.S. for two decades. They were small homes with simple floor plans designed to be more utilitarian than stylish. But, as time passed, original, unadorned Craftsman bathrooms evolved into rooms that were still practical but larger and more colorful. However, not all bungalow owners embraced the new aesthetic, and traditional Craftsman bathroom designs continued to be common and remain so today. Does this Spark an idea?

Floors

The bathroom floor in a traditional Craftsman bungalow was covered with small, white hexagonal tiles. If your bungalow's bathroom features these original tiles, you should keep them. If, over the years, they have been covered or removed, think about replacing them. Today, this type of tile is available in many colors, and choosing colored hexagonal tile gives a nod to authenticity while adding punch to the room. By the mid 1920s, traditional white floors were giving way to colorful 4 x 4 square tiles. Choosing this type of tile gives you the option of designing a more modern Craftsman bathroom.

Walls

With the advent of the Roaring Twenties, bungalow bathrooms moved from boring to bold. Brightly colored tiles, often with black borders, replaced white painted or tiled walls. For your bungalow bathroom, choose colors authentic to the day, like orchid and green, or opt for colors that reflect your decor style. For a more traditional look, opt for walls clad in white subway tiles.

Fixtures

Original Craftsman bungalow bathrooms had claw foot tubs which remain favorites today. If authenticity is what you're looking for, install a more modern one-piece tub without legs like that which became common in the 1920s. These tubs are similar to contemporary one-piece units minus the surround. They are made of cast iron glazed with porcelain.

Traditional craftsman bungalows had simple white pedestal sinks, but a 1920's bathroom might have featured a more colorful wall-hung sink in a favorite color of the day. Pedestal sinks remain common, and, if your bathroom is small, as many bungalow bathrooms were, a pedestal sink is a good choice because it takes up less visual space. If you decide to go with a more colorful model, coordinate it with the wall and floor tiles.

The toilet in a 1920's bungalow bathroom was white, probably with an oak seat and a wall-hung water tank. Oak toilet sets are readily available today as are reproduction wall-hung units.

Lighting

A Craftsman bathroom would have been lit by sconces flanking the a mirror or a built-in medicine cabinet or from a fixture installed above it. Look for rectangular light fixtures with glass shades and nickel, brass or chrome frames or more graceful designs with round globes. Include windows in your bathroom design. Natural light was an important part of the Craftsman philosophy, and bungalow bathrooms often featured at least one window. Choose windows with clear or stained leaded glass.

Design High End Dining Booths

Smart restaurant owners offer customers the option of sitting in a booth, no matter how high end the restaurant is. Booths are comfortable, relatively spacious and preferred by many people. Diner booths, however, do not belong in a formal dining room. Diner furniture would destroy the ambience desired by fine dining customers. The trick is for the restaurant owner to offer guests the comfort of booths with the posh trimmings of fine dining seating. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Wood Booths for Nice Restaurants

1. Create a fancy design for natural wood frames. Diner booths are often completely covered in vinyl; an alternative is a fine dining booth with stained wood frames. Include high backs for comfort and privacy, and choose a theme for the frames. Mission style frames may have slats in the sides. Or carve flower patterns into the sides for a floral theme. Choose knotty pine for booths and tables for another look and feel.

Stain the wood: stain will look nicer than paint and will also be easier to maintain (paint will eventually chip and look awful until repainted). After staining the wood, varnish well with 2-3 coats for durability.

2. Consider designing the booths with soft seats and backs instead of having guests sit on hard wood. Choose pillow fabric for both beauty and durability. While red vinyl seats do not belong in a high end dining room, all seats will get high traffic and will need to be cleaned regularly. Consider an easy to wipe material such as leather or a fancy pattern on vinyl.

Velvet is plush and comfortable, but when choosing cloth fabrics, plan how waitresses and bussers will clean while turning tables. For example, perhaps a stain remover spray should be among the regular cleaning supplies in case a guest spills wine on the seat.

3. Purchase tablecloths for high end booths, unless you want to use the knotty pine theme. A tablecloth gives the impression of fine dining and will add yet another touch of class to the booth. Tablecloths do not need to be white; look for tablecloth covers that go nicely with whatever fabric you choose for the booth seat and back.

Create A Mexican Courtyard Garden

Maybe one of the most important elements of any Mexican mission is the charm and elegance of a courtyard garden. Mexican courtyard gardens are characterized by a mix of native and colonial design, desert colors and plants, terracotta and usable plants such as herbs and vegetables. If you would like to create a Mexican courtyard garden of your own, a few tips will help get you started, Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create your courtyard by laying a patio with ceramic tiles. Classic Mexican courtyards were paved with handmade ceramic tiles, so choose Earth tones for your patio, such as reds, browns and terracottas. You may choose tile with nature designs, such as suns, cacti or leaves pressed or drawn into the clay.

2. Set aside a space in your Mexican courtyard garden for outdoor entertaining. A hand-made brick oven or barbecue is a common feature in a Mexican courtyard, and is usually placed near rustic wood or wrought-iron benches or tables for easy serving of guests. You may also consider a small water feature, such as a fountain made from old terra-cotta pots or a small fish pond to add to your garden atmosphere.

3. Choose outdoor lighting for your courtyard typical of Mexico and the Mission era. You might consider wrought-iron candelabras for tables and other surfaces or Mexican lanterns and sconces made from stamp metal and iron.

4. Use Earthenware and terracotta pots as decoration, candle holders, pots for plants and even incorporate them into your water features. Even today, used and broken terracotta Earthenware is a common feature in Mexican courtyards and gardens.

5. Cultivate fruit-bearing trees, an important element of a Mexican garden. Depending on your climate, you might consider banana, orange, lemon or various nut trees. A small vegetable garden is also a key part of any Mission-style garden, and should include a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs as well as fruits and vegetables.

6. Select from a variety of decorative plants typical to the climate and style of a Mexican courtyard garden. No Mexican courtyard is complete without a variety of cacti and bromeliads, which will add the finishing touch to the design of your garden. You may also consider archways or trellis covered in morning glory or rex-begonia, hanging pots and terracotta Earthenware with ferns, orchids and aloe vera or even a small dahlia tree tucked in a corner.

Abilene offers a number of historic venues perfect for weddings and receptions, like the Paramount Theater built in 1930.

Located in west central Texas, the city of Abilene is known as "the Friendly Frontier" and offers a number of unique venues for both weddings and receptions, namely its restored historic buildings like the Grace Museum and the Paramount theater, whose Spanish-Moorish architecture has been elaborately restored to its original grandeur. In contrast, other options, including a number of privately-owned historic inns and the Lytle Cove Cottage, embody Abilene's southern charm while offering tranquil country settings away from the bustle of downtown.

The Vintage House Bed and Breakfast

An elegant two-story brick house built in 1927, the Vintage House Bed and Breakfast was restored to its original beauty in 1999. The building offers a quiet, antiquated setting and welcomes weddings and receptions. Spaced to include a large living room area, a warm dining room and a sun room, most of which are painted a tranquil baby blue and features golden oak floors. Antique furniture and decorations are found throughout the house; furniture including mahogany banquet tables, Victorian sitting benches, as well as a chandelier, marble fireplace, and an ornately-carved antique pump organ adorning the living room.

The Grace Museum

A truly unique venue housed in a historic hotel built in 1909, the Grace Museum features impeccable wedding venues including an elegant marble ballroom featuring dark green walls and pillars topped with intricately-carved capitals and an enclosed courtyard facing a glass atrium. A number of galleries and open areas exist within the museum, each showcasing the building's Mission Revival-style architecture, while the building's most often used wedding and reception area is its open-air rooftop terrace overlooking the city of Abilene. The museum offers a number of wedding packages designed around a specific venue, each including photography and DJ services.

Lytle Cove Cottage

An exquisite two-story Victorian cottage 10 miles south of Abilene, the Lytle Cover Cottage sits on five acres consisting of elaborate gardens and a number of beautiful venues for any wedding ceremony and includes a Victorian arbor in the front gardens and a rustic pavilion located in the expansive country gardens located in the back of the estate. An hospitable staff takes care of all preparations, while wedding packages include accommodations for the bride and groom in the cottage's Victorian bridal suites as well as guest lodgings and the use of an indoor reception area dressed in warm decor and adorned with antique wooden furnishings.

The Paramount Theater

Opened in 1930, the Paramount Theater is one of Abilene's most unique venues. The illustrious movie palace features Spanish-Moorish architecture, most notably seen in its auditorium which resembles an old Spanish town with a domed ceiling painted like a night sky with stars and passing clouds illuminated by the house lights. The elaborate architecture has been painstakingly restored, including the antique lighting fixtures, the deep red drapes and gold-trimmed tormentor, and the expansive multilevel lobby featuring a grand mezzanine and antique furniture. The theater may be rented for weddings and receptions with rental prices including the use of the theater's state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, retrofitted during the theater's original restoration in 1986 and upgraded in 2006 and 2009.

What Kinds Of Furniture Do Cherry Trees Make

Cherry wood ages to a rich, red wine tone.

Cherry wood is prized for its fine grain and smooth texture. Although there are several types of cherry trees used in making furniture, black cherry is preferred by artisans, woodworkers and furniture makers because the strong, durable wood does not warp, swell or crack. Black cherry wood is used to craft pipes, picture frames, flooring, cabinets, musical instruments and an array of furniture pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Dining Room Furniture

Furniture made of cherry wood contains small imperfections in the grain called sap pockets, which add to the wood's natural beauty. These imperfections are witnessed in such dining room pieces as dining room tables, benches, hutches, credenzas and buffet sideboards. Mission and Amish style dining room furniture are frequently crafted from durable, solid cherry wood.

Bedroom Furniture

Cherry is a high quality wood noted for its reddish-brown color. The deep, rich wood is widely used in crafting bedroom furniture, such as bed frames, nightstand tables, dressers and armoires. Accent pieces, such as vanity tables, storage chests and jewelry boxes are also made of cherry wood.

Living Room Furniture

Delicate circular and swirling patterns are sometimes carved into cherry wood furniture. The carvings provide visual interest and beauty. This is witnessed in such living room furniture pieces as sofa frames, chairs, end tables, coffee tables, entertainment centers, plant stands, and entryway or foyer tables.

Home Office Furniture

Stained and polished cherry wood with smooth textures can be seen in traditional and contemporary home office furniture including computer stands, chairs, file cabinets, desks and drafting tables. Cherry wood is also used in the fabrication of office cabinets and bookcases.

Decorate A Bedroom With Cherry Furniture

Create a warm rich atmosphere by decorating your bedroom with cherry furniture. Cherry wood is a sturdy wood with a classy looking red shine. Use these tips to decorate a bedroom with cherry furniture and create a room you'll want to spend time in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide how much cherry furniture you want in your room. You can create a room full of cherry wood or a mix of different types of wood.

2. Pick light or dark-colored cherry depending on which shade suits your decor. Lighter cherry wood appears more modern than darker cherry. Dark cherry has a more sophisticated look.

3. Choose from types of furniture like hope chests, toy boxes, computer carts, book cases, chests of drawers, night stands, corner shelves, desks and beds.

4. Pick a paint color that lightens up the room and contrasts with the cherry wood like off white, cream, beige, neutral colors or earth tones. Darker colors can make the room appear dark next to the color of the wood.

5. Cover the bed with a brown, rust or orange colored comforter with matching pillow shams, a bed skirt and curtains. Choose from luxurious, patterned covers or deep solid shades to create a warm elegant look.

6. Choose a color that contrasts with the red wood like a shade of blue or green for the bedding and window covers. Then paint the room a bit lighter than the furniture coverings. Add floor mats in similar colors to break up the darkness of the room.

Tips On Choose Crown Molding

Crown moldings make a room look "finished."

Crown moldings are great way to add style to the transition between the wall and ceiling. Having crown molding in a room draws the eye up toward the ceiling and makes the room feel bigger. Crown molding comes in many styles and colors. Adding crown molding to a room in your house can enhance the atmosphere you've established in your home and is a great way to give a room a "finished" look. You have many options available for the kind of crown molding you choose for your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

The size of the room will help determine what crown molding looks best.

The size of the room, particularly the height of your ceiling, will help you determine which crown molding will work best. Some designers believe it's best to have an inch of molding for every foot in height of the ceiling. A crown molding that is too thick can overwhelm a small room and a molding that is too thin for a high ceiling may make the space feel out of proportion. Many people will put up small sample sections of the molding as a test to see which one looks most natural in a particular space.

Style

Crown molding is a great way to express the style of your home.

Crown molding can reflect many different kind of personal home styles. Crown molding styles can include a plain cut, a "dentil" cut (called this because it has "teeth") which is more formal, a "rope" cut with a classical rope design, and many others. Before selecting a crown molding it's useful to look at what is already in the home as far as trim on the windows/doors and baseboards. If these elements have already created a definite style of the home it may be helpful to take pictures and bring them with you as you select crown molding so that you will keep the current style of your home.

Material

Crown molding is available in different materials.

You have many types of materials to choose from for crown molding. Many people prefer a traditional solid wood because it can be easily sanded down, repaired and repainted. Wood molding comes in a variety of kinds including, oak, mahogany and poplar. Plaster molding is the most expensive because it's custom fit to the room, but some people prefer it because it won't warp as wood does, and it resists humidity. Polystyrene and polyurethane moldings, which are both synthetic, are lightweight, resistant to moisture, and budget-friendly.

Area

You can include crown molding in other elements of your design such as shelving and mantlepieces.

Many people prefer to have the crown molding installed throughout their home so it's important to think about what molding will look good in every room. Some designers even suggest expanding the coverage of your crown molding to tops of cabinets, mantles of fireplaces, shelving, ledges for pictures, and even outdoor areas of the home. Adding crown molding can bring elegance to a room and add character to your home.

Difference Between Red Oak & White Oak Flooring

Traditional oak flooring has been a popular choice for hundreds of years.

Oak is the most popular choice for wood flooring, and has been for centuries. It lends an air of richness to any home, and can add thousands of dollars to a home's resale value. Oak flooring meshes perfectly with any decor, from rustic to modern, and provides a warm background for any furniture style. Does this Spark an idea?

Red Oak Characteristics

Red oak ranges in color from light golden to reddish pink.

While both red and white oak are dense materials, with high shock resistance and resistance to wear, splitting and moisture, red oak is the most popular flooring choice. It has interesting grain, color and character. The color ranges from light golden to reddish pink. There are 20 different species of red oak. It sands better and is better if a bleached floor is the look you want, since it is a more porous wood. Red oak grows faster than white, and will have four to six rings per inch. The Janka Hardness Test is a common measure of wood hardness. Red oak measures 1,290 on the Janka scale. By contrast, Brazilian cherry is the hardest wood at 2,350, and Douglas fir is the softest, at 660.

White Oak Characteristics

White oaks has longer rays of grain than red oak.

White oak is the harder wood of the two types of oak. The grain is finer and less pronounced. The rays of grain are longer, producing long horizontal marks, and is a highly prized wood for use in non-flooring applications, such as Mission-style furniture, boats, wagon wheels and wine barrels. It is a warmer, golden-brown color, and is not as porous as red oak, so it accepts stain better and is more resistant to fungi and insects. It is a slower growing oak, and will have between 10 and 20 rings per inch. White oak measures 1,360 on the Janka scale. There are seven different varieties of white oak.

Benefits

Oak trees are a renewable resource.

Oak adds thousands of dollars to your home's value. It withstands the wear and tear of everyday traffic without needing replacement. It's a ecologically sound product, since it is a renewable resource.

Factors

Selecting the right board width is important to the overall look of the floor. Board width and thickness have evolved over the years from the 12 to 20 inch wide planks used in the 1600s to today's traditional 2-1/4 inch width. The trend in 2010 is to use board that are 3-1/4 inch in width. It provides a different look while avoiding the warping that can happen in the wide boards.

Boards also come in various grades. The best are the clear and select grades, since they will have fewer markings and will be more consistent in appearance.

Cost

Flooring is sold by the square foot, and the average price of oak in 2010 is $2 per square foot, with white oak slightly higher. More select cuts of oak will cost incrementally more.

Plan A Beach Trip

Plan a Beach Trip

I've written on this site about spending a day at the beach. Here I'll deal with the logistical undertaking involved in planning a beach trip for a family, which is a far greater challenge than hopping a bus for a short ride to the shore.

Instructions

1. In planning for a family visit to the ocean or to the lake, you'll have to contend with a range of enthusiasm and energy for the venture at hand. Let's assume that you're driving, as most summer travelers do. On a summer day, you have to expect traffic. Leave early, get there as early as possible and pack your car with plenty of nutritious snacks and drinks. Don't count on your car's air conditioning to keep you cool. Long, slow traffic can overheat almost everybody's car. If you don't exercise patience, your spouse and children could want to turn around as soon as they arrive. A friend of mine described the inventor of the seat back DVD player as a genius. If you have one installed in your vehicle, why not whet your kids appetite with videos like "Finding Nemo?"

2. Don't forget to bring your own camera, whether video or still. However I do suggest that you tote a backup camera, not your best because sand is the enemy of camera gear. Bring compressed air for frequent cleaning, make sure that your camera lens is protected by a filter and be prepared to sustain at least a little damage to capture your family's priceless beach memories.

3. When you get to your spot, scope it out and set up shade. Sunburn can make anybody miserable. As an adult, be sure to monitor how everybody applies sun block. Make sure that everybody stays hydrated.

4. The beach is a great place for catch, Frisbee, paddle ball and more. It gives your family an opportunity to get physical together. Keep your food on ice, or use mustard instead of mayonnaise, to keep sandwiches fresh.

5. Your children will have a range of swimming ability. Keep a close watch on the ones who can't swim well. As a former lifeguard, I promise you that nobody will keep as good a watch on your children as yourself. Introduce them to the fun of playing in the water. If you are a good swimmer yourself, give instruction but be patient. Even though my dad swam well, I learned through professional instruction, since I was initially quite unsure of myself. Respect your children's hesitation and don't mock their fears.

6. Remember to allow your family time between eating and drinking and swimming to avoid cramps.

7. If your beach is near an amusement park, recognize that your kids will expect you to allow them to ride at least something. If you set limits ahead of time, they'll learn deferred gratification and won't resent being denied every ride.

8. Finally, have fun. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my summer trips to the ocean growing up which is probably why as an adult, I've lived in Venice Beach since 1980.

Decorate A Home From The Early 1900s

Give your home a vintage look with early 1900s decor.

The beginning of the 1900s saw the death of Queen Victoria and the beginning of industrialization, both of which had a direct impact on the decor and interior design of homes in both Europe and the United States. Some homes were built after the Victorian style, elaborate and feminine, while a newer house style, the Colonial, favored a more straight-forward and practical design. Learn decorate your early 1900s home with authentic-looking pieces that match the style and mood of each room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Asses the style of your home. Homes made with decorative siding, turrets and gingerbread house-like elements are the traditional mainstays of a Victorian home. Colonial or Cape Cods were the opposite: big, box like structures with many windows and a plain front. Decide which type of style your home falls under.

2. Capitalize on the interior. Traditional Colonial homes had exposed rafters and beams that gave rooms a rustic appearance. Victorian homes were more finished, often having papered walls and smaller rooms. Look at the interior design of each room and make a note of what elements you want to highlight.

3. Pick a color scheme. Victorian colors were all about rich coloring combined with ivory undertones. Deep green, red and gold were used frequently in decor. Traditional Colonial decor based much of its color scheme on warm and soft colors such as deep brown, soft taupe and muted green. Find two or three colors that coordinate for your chosen style.

4. Add antique furniture. Queen Victoria was a proponent of refined elegance and feminine details. Chairs with carved legs and backs and sofas made of rich cloth such as velvet or silk look elegant in a Victorian home. Straight-backed chairs, angular or flat tables or stools were common in Colonials. This Mission style sought to distance itself from the ornate and elaborate decor of Victorian embellishments. Choose a style that matches your home and find furniture pieces that all have similar qualities.

5. Add accessories. For the Victorian home, gilded frames, carved clocks or patterned china suggests the richness and opulence this theme is based on. Plain ceramic vases, wooden bowls or nature elements such as a gathering of dried grasses or pine cones accentuates the earthiness and simplicity of a Colonial. Incorporate a few accessories into each room to stimulate visual interest in both the walls and on the furniture.

Pick A Desk For A Home Office

Anyone who works from home knows that having the right equipment can increase your chances of success. One of the most important tools in your home office is your desk. Here's pick one that's right for you.

Instructions

1. Evaluate your needs. Make a list of tasks you anticipate doing at your desk. You also should make a list of items you'll be using at your desk. For instance, consider whether you'll need your desk to accommodate your computer. Determine if your desk must have filing capabilities. If your home office will be open to the public, you may want a desk that is aesthetically pleasing.

2. Measure your work area. If it's a small office, you'll need to look at compact desks, perhaps with hutches. If it's a larger area, L-shaped desks might be an option.

3. Consider that being comfortable while working makes you more effective, and that the right desk might increase your efficiency. You may want to spend more money if your desk can contribute to your bottom line. Bonus: If you work from home, this desk is a potential write off.

4. Look online. Search various office furniture websites online for ideas as to what's available and price ranges. Getting an idea as to what's available and their pricing allows you to more effectively shop in person.

5. Shop in person. Go to various office furniture stores and look. Places to shop for a desk include Office Depot, Office Max, Furniture Row or Staples. Compare prices and options to what you found online.

6. Ergonomics is everything. If you're not comfortable at your desk, you're going to probably going to cry about how tight your shoulders and back feel. Spend a little extra on an ergonomic desk.

Donate Office Supplies To Public Schools In New York

Many charities facilitate donations of office supplies to schools.

Donated office supplies and other items can help enhance the learning environment for students. Public schools frequently require books, computers, furniture and other supplies. Instead of throwing away office supplies that you no longer need, consider donating them to schools. You can also donate new items. A number of charities will accept office supplies and other items, and they will distribute these donations to public schools.

Instructions

1. Research charities. The Pencil Box, Tools 4 Schools, Materials for the Arts and Children for Children are charities that accept donations of office supplies ranging from paper to office furniture. These organizations distribute supplies to public schools in New York City. When researching charities, you should confirm how and where they distribute supplies, what items they are looking for and if they are registered. You should also look for independent reviews of the charities you identify in your research.

2. Call a school or a school district. If you would like to donate to a specific school or school district, contact them directly to see if they accept donations of office supplies. Explain who you are and why you wish to donate to the school. The following steps still apply if you have decided to donate directly to a school rather than a charity.

3. Make an inventory of your office supplies and identify what you might want to donate. You may want to include books, computers, furniture and other office supplies such as paper, staplers, pens and pencils. Books, computers and office furniture should be gently used and in good condition.

4. Contact the charity. Speak directly with staff at the charity or charities you are considering to better understand the mission and work they do. You can also confirm what items are needed, share a list of what you would like to donate, and ask how donations can be made.

5. Pick a charity. Your research will help you identify what items charities are seeking. It will also help you identify a specific charity serving your neighborhood, a neighborhood of interest, or a school that you would like to direct your donation. Researching the history and background of a charity will also help you decide which one you would like to support.

6. Buy new office supplies. If you would like to buy items that the charity is specifically seeking, or if you would like to add to the inventory you will be donating, considering buying supplies. Remember to always confirm which items the charity will accept before buying anything.

7. Wipe or clean any furniture you wish to donate, especially if your item has been in storage. Make sure they are safe to use and not damaged. Also ensure that any phones, fax machines, computers, printers or other equipment that you are donating is in good operating condition.

8. Drop-off the items or arrange for pick up of your donation. Confirm if the organization is willing to pick up donations from your home or office.

9. List your items on charity databases. Some charities may have a web-based database where you can list the items you wish to donate. Schools then search the database and contact you to arrange for pick up. The Pencil Box and Materials for the Arts maintain these types of databases.

10. Consider making a financial contribution. You may wish to make a financial contribution to assist charities that collect and distribute office supplies and other items for public schools. Some organizations, such as Donor's Choose and Adopt-a-Classroom, also allow donors to donate funds to specific proposals posted by teachers. Some of these proposals include requests for office supplies.

Growing Fig Trees In Arizona

Immature figs

Figs are deciduous fruit trees native to the Mediterranean and well suited to all four major growing zones in Arizona. The arboretum at the University of Arizona in Tucson features at least three varieties of figs including one, a Ficus carica or edible fig, that dates back to the 1930s. Figs make excellent ornamental trees because of their deeply lobed foliage and can often produce two crops of fruit in a single growing season. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fig

Decide where to plant your fig tree bearing in mind that, according to horticulturalists at the University of Arizona, good soil is the single most important factor. Full sun is important as well.Test the soil where you intend to plant by digging a hole 8 inches wide and 32 inches deep using a post hole digger. Fill the hole with water and let it drain for an hour before filling it again. If the water is gone 24 hours later, the soil has good drainage. Also, plant your fig tree in an area where fallen fruit will not be too great a nuisance.

2. Fig cluster

Buy your tree from a reputable nursery. Ask for a variety best suited to your elevation, expected winter temperatures and soil types.

3. Fig slices

Plant your fig tree about 3 inches deeper than it was growing in the nursery. Cut back top growth to encourage lateral branching and reduce the need for water while the tree is becoming established. Crumble the soil used to cover the roots and tamp it well to ensure good contact. Water well after planting.

4. Prune your established fig, using pruning shears or pruning saw, only to remove dead or diseased branches at least until the tree reaches full maturity. After that, thin lightly in early spring in order to encourage growth.

5. Water your Arizona fig tree every three to five days during all periods of drought and mulch the shallow root system--a few feet wider than the drip line of the canopy--in order to help the soil retain moisture and minimize weeds that will compete with the tree for nourishment and moisture.

6. Harvest figs as they become fully ripe, even if you do not plan to eat or process them, to minimize pest infestations and ground litter.

Remove Dresser Drawers

Removing drawers from a bureau is often a good way to clear space in a small room. If you are installing a fixture within a drawer, this will assist in replacing the drawer face. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pull the drawer straight out all the way. The drawer should be on a guide. If it gets stuck, stop pulling and look inside to see if it is off track or at an angle. Push the drawer slightly inward, then gently pull back out. It should come out all the way.

2. Many drawers have latches on the ends so they do not fully come out of the dresser. Push on the end of the lever to release drawer. If the level is screwed in, undo the screws, then pull out fully.

3. If you do not wish to use the drawers again, or need the space of the drawer inside the unit and want the front design, take the cover off of the drawer. Check to see if it is screwed on or if the wood is hitched.

4. If the drawer face is screwed on, undo the screws to the face is free from the rest of the drawer. If there are no screws, try pulling the face off. If this does not come off easily, saw off the face of the drawer.

5. Clean the outer surface of the unit where the drawer face will be fit. Let dry.

6. Line the back of the drawer face with super glue or wood glue.

7. Press the drawer face onto the unit in its proper position. Hold in place for 2 to 4 minutes, or as long as the instructions on the glue indicate.

The Styles Of Cabinets

Contemporary style cabinets can give your kitchen or bathroom a sleek, polished look.

While cabinets are designed to provide convenient storage in your kitchen and bathroom, their appearance can have a major impact on the overall look of your room. Choosing cabinets in a style that does not match the rest of the items or design elements in a space can create a disordered feeling and disrupt the aesthetic flow of a room. However, a variety of cabinet styles complement many different design schemes, so you should find an option that creates the ideal look for your kitchen or bathroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Contemporary Cabinets

Modern cabinets usually feature flat surfaces and few decorative details, such as crown molding, raised panel doors or carvings. The lack of ornamentation gives these cabinets a neat, compact look which often makes them an ideal option for a smaller kitchen or bathroom. Contemporary style cabinets are usually made from materials like plastic, metal, glass, concrete and recycled items. However, a room that relies heavily on these types of materials often lacks warmth, so modern cabinets are often paired with floors and countertops made from natural materials like stone and wood to give the space a more inviting feel.

Mission Style Cabinets

Mission style cabinets have a heavy, weighted look because they are usually made from solid wood. The doors feature rectangular paneling or beveling that has a curved crown and often have glass fronts that allow you to display items inside. The hardware and joinery are often highlighted on Mission style cabinets, which are usually finished with a mid-tone stain that give them a warm look.

Arts and Crafts Cabinets

For a simple, rugged look, arts and crafts cabinets are an ideal option. The design features clean, straight lines and few decorative elements. Its proportions are fairly heavy, which give the cabinets a sturdy, weighty look. Traditional arts and crafts cabinets also make use of dovetailed drawer boxes and brass or iron hardware. They are usually made from woods like oak, cherry, ash, hickory, maple and birch.

Shaker Cabinets

Similar to arts and crafts cabinets, shaker cabinets typically feature even fewer decorative details. The style is marked by a practical, functional design that features flat paneled doors and tapered posts. These cabinets are known for their sturdy look and typically have straight or slightly curved lines, which give them a simple, streamlined look. Shaker cabinets are usually made from woods that are native to the U.S., including maple, ash, birch, hickory and cherry. They may be left with a natural finish or painted to blend with the rest of your kitchen or bathroom's d cor.

Country Style Cabinets

Country style cabinets have a highly decorative, worn look that creates a warm, cozy feel for your kitchen or bathroom. They often feature beadboard panels or doors and sometimes have wire grill or stained glass inserts in the doors. Country style cabinets are usually glazed or covered with milk paint in bright colors like blue, yellow or cream. However, they often have a distressed finish to give them an aged, old-fashion look.

Creative Ideas For Home Office Furniture

The home office often serves many functions as the place where you manage your business as well as your home. It is a room in which you have the freedom to incorporate any style of decor. Whether you want an expansive work space with plenty of room to spread out or a small desk that blends into the background, some creative furniture ideas will meet your needs.

Secretary

If your home office is located in the corner of another room, a secretary is an ideal piece of furniture. A secretary has a fold down desk that, when closed, leaves the piece looking like an ordinary set of drawers. When you fold the desk down, most secretaries reveal several small drawers and cubby holes that are ideal for sorting mail, notes, papers and other office supplies. The drawers or shelves that take up the bottom of the secretary can be used for everything from books to a small wireless printer.

Cubby Shelving

Instead of using a traditional bookshelf, cubby shelves provide a more creative use for your office space. These small, square cubbies are also ideal for keeping things organized. Special cloth drawers are available that fit each cubby hole perfectly. You can also incorporate labeled boxes for storing receipts, photos and office supplies. Magazine holders fit well on these shelves for corralling all of your subscriptions. Books can be sorted neatly by subject with each category assigned to its own cubby.

DIY Desk

If your home office is still lacking the perfect desk, you can solve this problem by constructing the ideal desk yourself. A hollow core door from a local home improvement store serves as a perfect desk top. When it comes to holding your desk up, you have a variety of options. File cabinets are an excellent support for this type of desk and also provide much needed storage and organization. If you prefer a more open look, purchase four table legs from the same home improvement store or from an online store such as TableLegs.com, which offers nearly any style of leg.

Wall Space

Storage space is often minimal in small home offices. If you find your work space overflowing with papers, to do lists and other clutter, a creative use of your free wall space may help solve the problem. Cabinets reclaimed from a kitchen or bathroom can provide excellent storage for office supplies and equipment. Mount hooks along the bottom of the cabinet, and hang clipboards from each one or use small clips that can hold anything from pictures to bills. A large bulletin board or whiteboard mounted on the wall is another excellent use of this space. If you like to keep a plethora of sticky notes and memos nearby, you can easily tack them up here. If thinking on paper on a large scale is more your style, a giant whiteboard with a set of multi-colored markers may suit your work style nicely.

Refinish Colonialstyle Recliners

Recliners, rockers and gliders can be easily refinished for lasting use.

Colonial-style recliners can add an air of history to your front porch or living room, but after years of use even these durable chairs can need refinishing. Often they are crafted with wood, so refinishing them can be as simple as removing the cushions and sanding away the old wood finish, along with the scrapes and bruises of everyday wear and tear. Investing just a little time in refinishing your furniture can transform an unsightly recliner into an asset to your home's decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the cushions from the recliner. Cover any fabric or metal with plastic sheeting, using masking tape to hold it in place. Additionally, make sure that any metal or moving joints are covered with plastic sheeting or plastic wrap to protect them from sawdust and wood stain.

2. Install medium-grit sandpaper into the palm sander and sand off the existing coat of wood stain. To avoid unsightly scrapes, chips and uneven surfaces, do not apply pressure to the palm sander. Only use the medium grit sandpaper to remove the wood finish. Do not sand rounded edges using the palm sander.

3. Install fine-grit sandpaper into the palm sander and carefully smooth out the wood by moving the sander in small circular motions. Make sure that all scrapes from the chair's wear and tear are smoothed out during this stage in sanding.

4. Sand away the old wood finish and any blemishes on rounded edges by hand using the medium- and fine-grit sandpaper. Make sure that there are no visible pieces of the previous wood stain or wood finishing on the chair before moving on.

5. Using a vacuum or a damp cloth, remove all of the wood dust from the recliner.

6. Apply an even coat of a preferred oil-based stain, following the directions on the container. Apply the stain with the grain, and use a rag to wipe off any excess to create a smooth finish. If you want the wood stain to be darker, apply more coats until you are satisfied with the color. Allow the wood to dry overnight before removing the plastic protection and replacing the cushions.

Many people pay others to put together their office chairs because of the perceived degree of difficulty. However, not every office chair is hard to build. Most only take about an hour.

2. Separate the major parts of the chair and arrange them in your space.

3. Remove any bags containing screws, nails or other parts and set them aside.

4. Find the instruction manual for assembling your chair. Office chairs vary greatly depending on features, size and capabilities, so you will need to consult the manual to build your chair.

5. Use the drill or screwdriver to install any screws or other parts of the chair as directed by the manual.

What Type Of Cabinets For A Craftsman Kitchen

Craftsman style is marked by hardy construction and simple lines.

A craftsman-style home reflects the design and architecture popularized in the later part of the 19th century. The style remained popular throughout the 1930s, and these homes are still found in older neighborhoods, particularly in the Midwest and along the west coast. In recent years, the style, which features wraparound porches, ornate built-ins and low-pitched roof lines, has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Kitchen design, and kitchen cabinets in particular, is a key ingredient to pulling off the craftsman style. Does this Spark an idea?

Kitchen Style

The kitchen of a craftsman home is defined by limited decoration, simple lines and strong construction. Using natural materials, particularly hardwoods, and maintaining their natural colors are key to achieving this look. Cabinet hardware is often simple and created from dark-colored metals, particularly iron or brass. Modern-style sinks may be made of stainless steel or, for a more authentic look, porcelain. The overall look should be simple and clean, with well-constructed pieces. Cabinetry for this style will often require customization and tends to be more costly than the standard store-bought variety.

Mission Doors

Simple cabinet styles are a hallmark of the craftsman style. Mission-style cabinetry is ideal for this look as it is plain and simple with no elaborate woodwork. These cabinets are generally made from mahogany but are also widely available in maple, hickory, ash or cherry woods. For a modern option, homeowners can utilize recycled wood for a more eco-friendly option. Cabinet doors are generally crafted with a raised, rectangular panel. Some customized sets will include glass-front cabinets, though these were not traditionally associated with the craftsman style. Colors are often medium in tone, keeping with the natural color of the wood, such as blond or dark cherry.

Shaker Doors

Shaker-style cabinet doors are another common choice in craftsman remodels. The styles are a bit more diverse than the mission style, and are available in a number of wood types and colors. To maintain the classic craftsman style, medium-toned wood colors are preferable. Shaker cabinet doors generally have a recessed panel that can be rectangular, cathedral-shaped or in a four square pattern. As with mission-style doors, modern shaker designs may be finished with glass instead of wood.

Quarter Sawn Oak

Quarter sawn oak cabinets are a classic style that fits perfectly with the craftsman look. The style is created by milling wood with angles of either 60 or 90 degrees, giving the doors a simple, clean appearance. The construction allows plenty of the natural wood grain to show through; adding a glaze or stain will aid in bringing out more of this detail. The cabinet look can be completed with the addition of brass or iron hardware, a staple of the craftsman decorating style. Quarter sawn oak cabinets usually have a sturdy appearance, ideal for historic homes.

The History Of Spanish Style Homes

Spanish-style homes are popular today in Southern California and Arizona, as well as Florida and Texas. The architectural style originated in the ornate buildings of 17th- and 18th-century Spain. California missions of the18th-century California also influenced this style. Spanish-style homes combine simple red roofs and stucco walls with complicated wrought iron detailing and colorful tile work. Does this Spark an idea?

Identification

When people talk about a Spanish-style home, they're usually referring to several characteristics: flat or gently sloped red-tiled roofs; eaves that don't overhang; arches over doors, windows and/or porches; stucco walls; and asymmetrical external construction, such as an off-center door.

Spanish Baroque

Spanish baroque architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries was richly ornamental. The Plateresque and Churrigueresque styles of the late Spanish baroque period were especially intricate, featuring curved shapes and visual movement. Bertram Goodhue designed the Administration and Botanical buildings in San Diego's Balboa Park for the Panama-California Exposition in 1915; these buildings feature carved facades, and exemplify Churrigueresque style. The Panama-California Exposition helped spur the Spanish eclectic architectural movement of the 20th century.

Mission Revival Style

Mission revival style began in the 1890s. Architects based the style on the California missions that the Spanish Catholic colonists built in the mid- to late-18th century. The revival houses borrowed the missions' architectural elements such as bell towers and roof parapets. They also featured recessed front porches. The Beverly Hills Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, is a good example of a grand Mission-style building, featuring a large faux bell tower that is part of the exterior wall.

Spanish Eclectic

Architects built Spanish eclectic (also called Spanish revival) houses from about 1915 to 1940. This architectural movement blends mission with elements of Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance styles. The simple mission bell tower and stucco walls might share space with more ornate details, such as turrets, ornamental tiles on floors and walls, stained-glass windows, and intricate wrought-iron bars over windows and balconies.

Monterey Style

Monterey style, which had its heyday from 1925 to 1955, is a variation of Spanish revival architecture: Its standout design element is a second-floor balcony that almost always runs the entire length of the house. The house's main roof shades this balcony. Two-story houses are more common in the Monterey style than in the mission or eclectic styles. This style also has some design elements in common with the colonial revival: For example, the front porches often feature columns, and pediments (triangular structures above rectangular ones) appear where they didn't in strictly mission and eclectic styles.

The History Of Las Fallas

Fireworks

The Fallas festival takes place in Valencia, Spain for five days every March, culminating in St. Joseph's Day, March 19. The most popular part of the festival are the processions of puppets (Fallas) crafted from paper, wood and wax. These are later set afire.

Activities

During the Fallas festivals, participants dress in colorful costumes for many processions. Valencia also proclaims a Fallas Queen.

Fallas

The Fallas are often modeled after famous people including politicians and celebrities. Although they are caricatures, sometimes they can be very ugly, particularly if the craftsman is making a political statement.

Origins

Some believe that the festival originated in the Middle Ages when carpenters burned wood to celebrate St Joseph's Day, Valencia's patron saint. Others think that the burning of bonfires goes back to pagan times with the Catholic Church "Christianizing" the festival in later centuries.

Burning

On the evening of March 19, the Fallas are stuffed with fireworks. At midnight, crowds gather and the Fallas are set on fire.

Museum of Las Fallas

Every year one Falla is saved from destruction and placed into the Museum of Las Fallas. The Fallas are such good quality that they have been compared to exhibits at Madame Tussaud's.

Storage Ideas For Small Spaces

Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

You can maximize your storage capacity by knowing the basics of arranging each room so it's orderly and functional. Small spaces, in particular, can present a challenge, but the task isn't daunting once you learn make the most of the space you have. The three areas where small spaces can best be used for storage are the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Bathroom Storage

You can readily find storage in the bathroom by installing such items as racks and hooks. For example, install hooks on the inside of the bathroom door for robes or towels. Make use of your shower rod by affixing additional hooks to hold such items as net bags to store washcloths and shampoos and a back brush. Install hooks under or next to the medicine cabinet to keep your toothbrushes conveniently handy but out of the way. Wicker baskets can be added to the wall for the storage of hand towels, tissues, soap, and other incidentals that are used on a daily basis. To open up floor space, use the dead spaces in the bath for shelving, such as those spots beside the vanity, over the toilet, or behind the door.

Bedroom Storage

You can add more storage in your bedroom by making a depository out of your headboard. By building a headboard for storage, you can stow away books, lamps, extra linens, bedding, and blankets in the unit. Roll-out or flat bins under the bed can be used for linens too, as well as items that aren't used frequently. Use an accordion rack on the wall to hang hats, jewelry, or scarves.

Kitchen Storage

Probably the kitchen is the area of the house where you'll find you have the greatest need for storage. As an efficient kitchen saves steps and time, your storage arrangement should focus on accomplishing this objective. Increase the capacity and functionality of your cabinet drawers by outfitting them with lift-out trays. Fill the trays with items you often use and maintain the space beneath the trays to place objects you seldom need. Add open shelving on the walls about ten inches deep to stow dishes or spices. Make more space for your glassware by positioning each glass upside down. Hang an apron on the wall with lots of pockets to holds utensils and gadgets. To save drawer space and for safety, hang knives inside of a high cabinet. Arrange wooden spoons in a pitcher bouquet style to economize on drawer space. Kitchen towels can be placed in attractive baskets on the counter. A wooden ladder, painted to match the kitchen decor, can hold pots and pans on its steps in a corner. You can also hang pots and pans from a ceiling rack. Place coffee cups on hooks underneath cabinets. The use of lazy Susans or cabinet organizers with pull-out shelving can create more storage too. Install the microwave on a shelf above the counter. Set place mats on a clipboard hung from a hook inside the pantry. Keep everything you need daily handy and organized for easy access.

Donate Your Washer & Dryer In Connecticut

Those old appliances can serve another home.

Donating old washer and dryer appliances is a convenient way to unload them once you've upgraded, give back to someone else and save money on your taxes. Connecticut residents have a range of donation options. You'll receive a tax break by donating to a 501(c)3 organization and can even schedule a pickup, saving you time and effort. Choose the most convenient donation option based on where you live. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the outside of your used washer and dryer with disinfectant spray to remove dust and dirt. Locate the manual, if you can find it. Place the manual in a plastic bag and tape this to your appliance.

2. Give the item to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, where used appliances are sold and the proceeds put into Habitat's housing development programs. Residents of Fairfield and New Haven counties can donate items to the Fairfield County ReStore, and additional stores exist for those in Danbury, New London, Salisbury, Middletown and Putnam. ReStore picks up large items like washers. Not all ReStores may have a need for washers and dryers, so call before you arrange a donation pickup.

3. Contact St. Vincent de Paul Mission's thrift store, which accepts large appliance donations like your washer and dryer. The items are given to poor people at no or very low cost, helping families become self-sufficient. Connecticut residents can find a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Waterbury or Derby (near New Haven); the store picks up large appliances.

4. Give the items to the ReCONNstruction Center, a building materials reuse center located in New Britain. This store sells items to the public at low cost and allows you to either schedule a pickup or drop off the goods yourself. The ReCONNstruction Center only accepts appliances five years old or newer.

Diy Curtain Rods

Turn a tree branch into a creatively different curtain rod.

Using found objects for decorating can save time and money. To add visual interest and organic shapes to a window treatment, turn a tree branch into a curtain rod. The unexpected use of a natural element for such a common piece of household equipment can turn a humdrum window into the focal piece of a room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find a straight branch, preferably from a deciduous tree. Keep in mind that your curtains will have to slide along the branch. Straighter branches are more functional, while more jagged branches can look more interesting. Consider how often you open and close your curtains to help you choose the perfect branch.

2. Tear off twigs and leaves before sanding the branch to get it ready for painting. If there is any dirt of moss remaining, wash it away using a scrub brush. This makes the paint adhere better and will ensure that your curtain rod won't chip. For a cleaner look, peel away all bark from the branch before painting.

3. Choose a color of latex-based spray paint that complements your room. The latex in the paint allows it to flex so it can stick to the uneven surface of the branch. If you want your curtain rod to stand out, use a color that contrasts with the color of the wall behind it.

4. Spray paint the branch while holding the nozzle of the paint can about 1 foot away from the wood. The paint will go on evenly so long as the can is held at a distance. This process can get messy, so it is best to do this outside, over some spread-out newspaper, while wearing gloves.

5. Hang the rod using three metal curtain-rod brackets and six screws. Brackets can be purchased at most home-improvement stores. Make sure that the brackets are positioned perfectly to accommodate any bends in the branch.

Renovate Old Furniture

Furniture can become dull-looking if not given the proper care.

Furniture becomes grimy, scratched or stained with frequent use. It may suffer from years of neglect, thus making it necessary to renovate the piece before placing it in your home. You do not have to purchase expensive furniture refinishing kits in order to restore the shine or to repair scratches and stains in the wood. Caring for your furniture correctly ensures that the piece looks attractive in your home for many years.

Instructions

Cleaning Furniture

1. Dust your wood furniture with a dusting tool.

2. Moisten a cloth with the mineral spirits.

3. Rub the cloth over the entire wood surface of the old furniture. The mineral spirits effectively cleans grime, oil, wax buildup and stains in the wood. There is no need to rinse the mineral spirits.

Scratch Repair

4. Crack a fresh walnut or Brazil nut with a nutcracker.

5. Remove the meat from the nut.

6. Rub the Brazil or walnut meat onto the scratch on your wood furniture, rubbing along the grain of the wood. The oils in the nut will darken the scratched area.

7. Buff the area with a soft cloth to remove any residue. Repeat the method until the scratch blends in with the rest of the wood.

Homemade Furniture Polish

8. Mix 1 qt. of mineral oil and 2 tbsp. beeswax or carnauba wax into a double boiler on your stove and turn the heat on medium.

9. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon once the wax starts to melt. Continue heating until all the wax melts. Stir the mixture again.

10. Allow the mixture to cool and then pour it into plastic or glass bottles. Use the homemade polish as you would any commercial furniture polish.

Free Trees For Texas Landowners

Trees offer many benefits to Texas landowners, from decreased cooling costs to increased land values.

Trees offer many benefits to landowners. Planting trees around a home can increase the home's value by up to 15 percent, according to the Arbor Day Foundation. By shading windows and walls, trees act as natural air conditioners and can reduce cooling costs by up to 50 percent. Rows of trees serve as windbreaks, which help slow erosion and soil degradation, reduce evaporation, increase soil moisture and act as sound barriers. And, of course, trees add aesthetic value. Several organizations offer free trees to Texas landowners. Does this Spark an idea?

Tree Folks

Residents of Austin, Texas, are eligible for free trees through the Tree Folks organization. Tree Folks' mission is to "grow the urban forest of central Texas through tree planting, education and community partnerships," according to the organization's website. Tree Folks operates several tree giving programs. CommuniTrees provides free trees through grants to schools, churches, public housing communities and green spaces. Each October, Tree Folks distributes more than 2,500 saplings on a first-come, first-served basis during Sapling Days, held each week at various venues throughout the city. The NeighborWoods Program distributes more than 4,000 trees each year. Tree Folks staff canvass the city for optimal tree-growing spaces, and then plant a flag and leave an order form. Landowners can then order a free tree to plant in the chosen space.

Fort Worth Forestry Section

The City of Fort Worth's Forestry Section offers two free tree programs. To participate in the Neighborhood Tree Planting Program, neighborhood groups must sign up between 25 and 75 residents. The Forestry Section then provides up to two 5-gallon trees per resident. The program is available between October and March of each year and sometimes extends into May. Fort Worth's Tree Grant program offers competitive grants for balled, burlapped and container-grown trees. Trees are grown on a local farm and include species such as red oak, cedar elm, bald cypress and desert willow. Applicants must agree to plant the trees within 24 hours of receipt, care for the trees for at least two years and locate all utility lines before accepting trees. Preference is given to applications from neighborhood groups and to projects that involve drip emitter or tree bubbler irrigation systems rather than projects that depend on hand watering.

Keep Denton Beautiful

Keep Denton Beautiful, a nonprofit orgniazation, gives away free trees on National Make a Difference Day, which is held on the fourth Saturday in October. Residents of Denton, Texas, are eligible. Proof of residency is required. Keep Denton Beautiful requires applicants to preregister for trees online before the event. Available trees include species such as Mexican plum, burr oak, lacebark elm, Chinese Pistache and Texas redbud.
