Choose Area Rugs To Complement Your Home'S Decorating Style

With the eclectic looks prevalent in home decor today, there's a lot of leeway in rug choices. But here are some ideas. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a faded Oriental (from a fine antique Persian to a kilim or dhurrie) or Aubusson, a plain sisal, or a flowery hooked Victorian in an English country style room.

2. Go with a flowery hooked rug or an Oriental rug for a Victorian interior; shop for a faded Oriental or an Aubusson in a French country style room.

3. Find an Oriental or Aubusson for an Old World-style room.

4. Keep the rug plain and spare in a minimalism-style room. Options include a solid-color sisal or solid-color chenille over a hard-surface floor.

5. Put an obviously manmade rug in a high-tech room. A shag style, sisal or a flat commercial-style carpet work well.

6. Use a hooked rug, rag rug or painted canvas floor cloth (florals, trompe l'oeil or a motif matching another textile in the room) in cottage, American country and garden-style rooms.

7. Look for a William Morris-style rug, perhaps with an essentially abstract design, for arts and crafts style rooms, including Mission.

8. Select a fun faux zebra, leopard or tiger rug for a striking option in eclectic-ethnic decor. Sisal, coir and flat-woven, nubby dhurries work well, too.

9. Go with a nubby, handwoven geometric (possibly a stripe) or a sisal or coir rug for Mexican country style rooms.

Update Kitchen Cabinets With Molding

Molding can instantly transform your cabinets.

The kitchen is more than just the room where your store and prepare food. The kitchen is the place where many homeowners start their days with a cup of coffee or a bowl of cereal. Making the kitchen into a space that you truly want to spend time in is important. For example, your cabinets take up so much space in your kitchen that tweaking them can dramatically alter the look of your entire kitchen. You can update them rather easily without refacing or painting: molding can give them a more textured, interesting look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look through a book or catalog of cabinets with molding, making note of the styles that you like. Each style will give your kitchen a slightly different effect. For example, mission style molding will give your cabinets a new yet slightly traditional look. If you're looking for something more modern, flat, geometric panels might be more appropriate.

2. Measure the length of your cabinet doors and determine approximately how wide you want each panel of molding to be as well as how many panels you want. Use the catalog or book you had in step one, to be your guide.

3. Visit a home supply store and purchase the type of molding you've decided upon, cut to the dimensions you've determined. Mark where you want each panel with a piece of chalk.

4. Nail each piece of modeling in place using a brad at the top, middle and bottom of each panel. Once you've installed all the panels, place a counter setter on top of each nailed in brad and hit it with your hammer.

5. Add a small dab of wood putty on top of each brad with a putty knife. Sand down with 120-grit sandpaper when dry. Rub a tack cloth over the cabinets to remove the dust from sanding.

6. Prime each cabinet with oil-based primer and allow them to dry for three hours. Apply a several coats of the oil-based paint color of your choice, allowing each coat of paint to dry for 24 hours.

Get The Mirror Look When Refinishing Furniture

Refinishing a piece of furniture that's been worn over time is a great way to restore its previous shine and luster. To ensure the new finish lasts for a long time and achieves the best possible result you must work carefully and with patience. To get the mirror look when refinishing you must take extra steps to prep the furniture's surface and regularly polish as you work. It will take some extra time and effort but the results will leave you with a piece of furniture that looks brand new.

Instructions

1. Sand the surface of the furniture smooth with the 220 grit sandpaper. Sand away any imperfections to ensure the new finish goes on evenly and clean.

2. Apply a light coat of sanding sealer with a brush. This will prevent the new finish from blotching or becoming too dark and allow the new finish to shine. Let the initial coat of sealer dry, then smooth the surface of the furniture with fine steel wool and apply a second light coat.

3. Wipe on a light coat of stain with a clean cloth. After the stain has had several minutes to penetrate the wood wipe off any excess stain with another cloth.

4. Rub the surface of the furniture with a clean cloth after the stain has dried. This will smooth the wood surface and even the appearance of the finish.

5. Brush on a thin coat of polyurethane with a brush. After the initial coat has dried, smooth the furniture's surface with the fine steel wool and apply another thin coat. Allow the second coat to dry.

6. Polish the surface of the furniture with a clean cloth and the furniture polish. This will bring the new finish to a gleaming shine.

Open A Moving Company

Do you want to start a moving company? Starting a moving company will require more than just a strong person to move boxes around. It requires a plan. Every year, several small businesses are started, but many of them are not successful. In order to make your business successful, there are many things you must do. Here are some of the highlights. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Name your company. What do you want to name your company? Do some research and make sure the name you want to give your company is not already taken. You also need to determine if your company is going to be a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC, or Corporation.

2. Write up a business plan. The first part of a business plan should have a mission statement. The mission statement gives your company story in less than thirty seconds. In your mission statement, say who your company is, what you do, what you stand for, and why you do what you do. Check out mission statements for other moving companies in your area to get an idea of what to write. Tell the truth in the mission statement-write what you believe. Then write the executive summary. The first paragraph in the executive summary should include the name of your business, the location of your business, the product or service you sell, and the purpose for your business plan. In another paragraph, include projected sales and profits, the need for a business loan (if you need one), and other important highlights of your business that you don’t want the reader to miss. Remember, if you need to obtain financing for your business, you will need a business plan.

3. Obtain Financing. Visit a bank and meet with a loan officer. Have your business plan in hand. The bank is going to want to finance a business that is capable of making money. They want to see an owner with a plan and goals in mind.

4. Buy moving equipment. You’ll need more than your pickup truck when opening a moving company. You’ll want a vehicle that is up to the task. You will be moving other people’s valuables, and you want them to be safe and sound, and arrive at the owner’s destination in the same condition they were in when you loaded them in the truck. You will need to obtain extra equipment like moving pads, dollies, tie-downs, a ramp, and straps. You may also consider having a backup moving truck, in case the main truck ends up in the shop for repairs or maintenance.

5. Hire employees. You will need staff to help you in your moving company. You don’t want to be the only person loading and unloading other people’s valuables every day. You may not even want to do the physical loading yourself. Employ honest people because they will be dealing with other people’s valuables and you will ultimately be held responsible for any damage or loss.

6. Obtain insurance. Get an insurance policy that has a reasonable amount for damages and liability. You also need to make sure you have insurance on the vehicle itself.

7. Obtain permits. Some states require moving companies to obtain special licenses or permits in order to run their moving company. You may even have to take a test proving that you know move items from here to there. Contact your state’s business licensing office to find out the requirements for starting a small business.

8. Advertise your business. Create flyers to pass around the neighborhood and hang up at public bulletin boards. You can advertise your business on the truck itself. Include the name of your business, what your business does, your phone number, and address. Put your business name, phone number, and address in the yellow pages of the phone directory. You may also find it very helpful to start a website for your company.

9. Take care of your customers. Word of mouth is the most powerful way to secure future customers. Understand the customers needs and wants. Remember to “under promise” and “over deliver.” Leave a business card with your customer once the job is done. Do a good job, so he will refer your business to others and possibly return for more work in the future.

Types Of Wooden Handmade Chairs

Handmade chairs can have a great deal of character.

Chairs have been made by hand for centuries, and despite the fact that most furniture is manufactured today with machines, some craftspeople continue to make chairs by hand. A handmade chair can be more than just a place to sit; it can be an object of beauty and something to be shared by generations in a family. Does this Spark an idea?

Rocking Chairs

Before the advent of the padded recliner, the rocking chair was usually the most comfortable seat in the house. Rockers are characterized by long curved pieces of wood attached to the feet, allowing the sitter to rock backward and forward. Most rockers also have carved seats, armrests and profiled backs for maximum comfort. Rockers were very common in the Colonial era, and some of the original pieces from this era now fetch enormous prices at antique auctions. Hand building of rocking chairs allows features that are very difficult to emulate with machines, for example flowing lines that make joined pieces of wood such as the leg and the rocker appear to be a single form. The late master woodworker Sam Maloof was a master of this style.

Morris Chairs

The distinctive feature of a Morris chair is the adjustable back that is attached to the chair seat with hinges and supported by a piece of wood that stretches across the arms behind the back. The Morris chair got its name from the British designer William Morris, although there is some historical question as to whether Morris actually designed it. Most Morris chairs include upholstered cushions on the back and the seat, but their frames have been traditionally crafted out of wood for over 100 years. The Morris chair is central to the arts-and-crafts style which flourished in the early 20th century and encouraged hand crafted simplicity as a reaction to what these craftsmen saw as the excessive decoration of Victorian style.

Dining Room Chairs

A challenge to any craftsman is to construct a complete set of dining room chairs. Traditional sets of dining chairs include six side chairs without arms and either one or two chairs designed for the heads of the table and including armrests. The hand crafting of a set of eight chairs is a substantial amount of work, and without the automatic precision of power tools, it requires some skill to create chairs that all look the same. Sets of dining chairs are typically built as a set with the table that they sit around.

Characteristics Of A Well Written Statement Of Work

A statement of work should be very specific.

A Statement of Work (SOW) is a formal document to be agreed upon between a provider and a client. Often included as part of a formal contract, it is designed to clearly define and delineate the entire scope of a project, including deliverables, responsibility, delivery timelines and milestones, costs, and final approval. Each SOW is specific to the parties concerned, but a well-written SOW should have no ambiguities and contain certain key sections. Does this Spark an idea?

Purpose

This section describes overall information about the project, including background information, the reasons why the project must be done and generally provides a high level view of the expectations for its completion.

List of Deliverables

This is a detailed, comprehensive listing of the deliverables agreed upon between provider and client.

Scope of Work

This describes the exact nature of the tasks to be accomplished by the contractor or provider. This is a critical section, because it provides detailed information, such as who carries specific responsibilities for certain tasks, technical requirements such as what hardware or software will be used, and how the work will be evaluated and by whom. Its inclusion ensures that all members of the team are on the same page and have a clear understanding of what needs to be done.

Location of Work

This section is about where the work will be done, i.e., on-site or off-site, and where meetings will be held. The client may prefer that all work be performed at their headquarters or facilities, for example. If the provider works on the project from home or another location, that might be considered outside the scope of the project.

Schedule or Timeline

This section provides information on scheduling and milestones. It details exactly which deliverables will be accomplished at which stage of the project. It might include information on billable hours and how much time has been allotted for each aspect of the project.

Special Circumstances

This section is important because every SOW is unique and relevant only to the parties involved. Therefore, there may be special circumstances to be considered or important aspects of the project that are not covered elsewhere in the document, such as travel arrangements, corporate requirements, or other miscellaneous information.

Costs and Payment Schedule

This section indicates the expected cost of the project and details when payments will be made to the provider.

Open A Company For Selling Printing In Atlanta Georgia

Open a company for selling printing in Atlanta, Georgia and provide print brokering services to area businesses. Print brokers act as printing consultants, helping clients navigate through the complexities of print buying. Print brokers make money by buying printed products at wholesale, adding a mark-up percentage and reselling them to customers. Some brokers charge additional consulting or design fees for complex projects, but their primary function is to source for the best quality products that suit client needs and fit within their budget.

Instructions

1. Create a print broker business plan. Your plan will include every facet of your operation, from mission statement, business structure and start-up costs to market research, financial projections, operational procedures and which print vendors you'll use.

2. Set up your print broker office in your home or rented office space. Since most print broker work is done at the client's place of business, you'll only need the bare essentials such as phone, fax, copy machine, computer, organizational tools and office furniture.

3. Apply for an employer identification number (EIN) for your print company from the IRS. Even if you don't hire employees, your EIN is used to identify your company for tax purposes and opening print vendor accounts.

4. Register your printing company with the Georgia Secretary of State if it is structured as a limited liability company, partnership or corporation. If you will sell printing as a sole proprietor, you'll only need to register your business with the Fulton County Clerk of Superior Court by filling out an Application to Register a Business to be Operated Under a Trade Name form.

5. Apply for a business tax certificate (also called a "business license" in Atlanta) from the City of Atlanta Business Tax Division. Your wholesale print vendors will require a copy of the certificate before you'll be allowed to open an account.

6. Purchase business liability insurance for your print business and consider adding optional errors and omissions insurance to the policy. This will help protect you and your customers if a job goes bad.

7. Open wholesale printing accounts with trade print vendors. This type of printer, also called a "trade printer" or "trade only" printer, will sell only to print brokers and other printers to protect your client list.

Detailed Instructions On Make Foam Latex

You can make foam latex rubber from two chemical substances.

Creating objects out of foam rubber is not as difficult as it may sound, thanks to kits available online from theatrical suppliers. The easiest form of foam rubber to make is called "cold foam," which has all the properties of foam latex but does not requiring baking or curing in an oven. You can mix the foam from the kits and use it to sculpt items and pour molds for things like prosthetic ears or to fill stage props with spongy foam.

Instructions

1. Gather all your equipment together in a central work area. This is a very important step because once your cold foam is mixed it must be poured into a mold very quickly before the two chemicals in the mixture begin to set up. You won't have time to organize your tools once the chemical process begins.

2. Cover the floor and counter areas with thick plastic tarps. These foam products can damage unprotected floors. Don an apron and the rubber or latex gloves. Prop the protective eyewear on your head and have the canister respirator nearby.

3. Cover the inside of your mold with the release agent. You can use the release agent that comes with the foam kit, or you can use silicon spray-on oil. If you don't use a release agent, the foam rubber product will be impossible to remove from the mold.

4. Measure the precise number of grams of the Part A chemical as specified in the product directions on a gram scale. When you have the precise amount of chemical measured, pour it into a plastic mixing bowl.

5. Put on the protective eyewear and a canister respirator unit. Plug the electric mixer in and have it standing close by. Have the mold close by as well, both parts if it is a two-part mold.

6. Measure the precise amount of the Part B chemical on the gram scale. Pour this Part B chemical in with the Part A chemical in the mixing bowl.

7. Immediately begin to mix the two chemicals. You will have 15 seconds to mix the chemicals with the mixer before the foam will have "gone too far" to be poured easily.

8. Pour the chemical mixture into the mold. If it is a two-part mold, clamp the top side of the mold over the bottom side of the mold and bind the mold pieces together tightly. You will only have 15 seconds to accomplish this. If you don't get the foam into the mold in this short amount of time, the batch will be ruined.

9. Do not touch the mold while the foam is curing. The process takes about 20 minutes to complete.

10. Remove the top of the mold and pop the latex object out. If the latex is stuck to the sides of the mold, not enough release agent was used. You will have to use a fresh mold for a second attempt.

11. Trim and paint the mold to suit. Use PAX paints to paint on this kind of foam. Spray paints will eat the foam. Other types of paint won't stick to the foam very well.

12. Dispose of any equipment that still has foam residue on it. You cannot clean these items and you don't want to reuse them or risk contaminating the next foam batch.

Cut Stone & Brick By Hand

Use a bolster chisel to cut the brick or stone.

A skilled craftsman routinely cuts stone and brick to size with hand tools. Cutting brick and stone by hand gives a cut's finished surface a rough, natural look. Stone and brick cut with a saw has a smooth edge that does match the other sides. Cutting a single oversized stone or brick by hand in the work area takes less time than taking the brick or stone to a saw's cutting area, slicing the material to size and carrying the cut piece back to the work area for a test fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Layout the cut on the brick or stone's finished surface with a pencil, using a carpenter's square as a straightedge. Always cut brick and stone from the finished surface toward the back side.

2. Lay the brick or stone on a solid surface with the finished side facing up.

3. Press a bolster chisel's blade on the pencil mark. A bolster chisel has a wide and thin blade, usually 3-inches wide and about 1/8-inch thick. The blade centers below the bolster chisel's handle.

4. Create a 1/16- to 1/8-inch-deep mark along pencil line on the stone or brick's finished surface with the bolster chisel and a hammer. Strike the chisel's handle lightly several times until the line completely scores the brick or stone's surface. Pay special attention to a brick's corners.

5. Center the bolster chisel on the scored mark and strike the chisel's handle sharply. Continue to hit the chisel until the brick or stone snaps.

6. Trim the brick or stone's cut edge with a cold chisel and hammer, if needed. Hold the cold chisel's blade against the top of the rough cut and strike the chisel with the hammer. Repeat this until the cut edge has the desired finish. A cold chisel has an angled blade the same width as the handle.

Start A Furniture Business

Everyone needs furniture. Whether you're talking about college students or doctors, everyone's home or business needs furniture. There are lots of opportunities when starting a furniture business. Various decors and themes, specialty items and accessories make the furniture business endless as far as the kind of product you can provide to customers. To truly have a successful furniture business, however, you need to narrow down your initial inventory and fill needs other furniture stores in your area aren't meeting.

Instructions

1. Determine the kinds of furniture and accessories you want to sell. Perhaps you're only interested in selling office and business furniture, or maybe, you want to be a bedroom super store. Some furniture stores specialize in hard-to-find themes and decor. Your choice may reflect your own taste and interest, or you may identify a need in your community that is not fulfilled by other community furniture stores.

2. Write your business plan. Contact your local Small Business Administration representative for help (see Resources). Your business plan should include your goals, mission and methods. A tentative budget should also accompany your business plan. With your completed business plan, you are more apt to obtain financing from various entities including grants, loans and investors.

3. Identify an available location for your business. If you choose to run your business online exclusively, you will only need a warehouse location. However, if you want to run a business with a storefront and showroom, you will need a location that is commercially zoned and in a higher traffic area of your community. You can build a fantastic showroom, but if people don't ever drive by it, your exposure is limited.

4. License your business with your city and county, if required.

5. Find wholesalers and purchase your inventory. Shop around to get the best prices possible. While buying in higher quantities may get you better rates, it may be out of your financial capabilities in the beginning. Don't overextend when building up your inventory.

6. Keep records of everything. Inventory all of your merchandise. Maintain records of purchases and accounts payable and receivable. Keep track of all taxes due and pay them regularly.

7. Visit other stores. Take note of things they do well and things you don't like about their stores. Utilize what you learn in your own store.

8. Purchase a delivery van or truck. In the beginning, it's wise to purchase a gently used vehicle. If you already have a truck, a trailer might be just as wise of a purchase for furniture delivery. Remove any traces of the past owner and apply your furniture store's name to the vehicle.

Ask For Donations For Church

Asking for church donations requires tact.

Churches often need to ask for donations for money for special projects or items that are not in the regular church budget. Asking for donations tactfully can be challenging, yet necessary for the financial well-being of the church. Solicitors can ask individuals or businesses for cash or product donations, either in person, in writing, through emails or through phone calls.

Instructions

1. Introduce your church and its community ties. Play up its features; promote even those things that seem negative at first glance. If the church has only been in the community a short time, explain church goals for community involvement and the plans you have to accomplish your vision. Outline accomplishments in recent years.

2. Include written materials if possible, whether you visit the business personally or send a donation letter. People like to see concrete pictures of what your church has done. Newsletters, pamphlets, a church bulletin or website links all provide good options to engage potential donors. (Reference 1)

3. Ask clearly and specifically for contributions. This can be in terms of specific amounts of money, help with technology, discounts or donations. Explain why you need the donation.

4. Clarify how your church will benefit from contributions and why you need business support. Explain what you will do with the money or donation you receive from the business.

5. Elaborate on the benefits the business will receive through the donation. In addition to the intrinsic feeling of doing good for others, the business will show community support. Church members, in turn, will be more likely to support that business. Emphasize other ways the church can highlight the business, such as promoting the business in the bulletin or inclusion in the church business directory.

How Is The Salvation Army Funded

How is the Salvation Army Funded?

Government

The Salvation Army is part of the religious umbrella that receives faith-based governmental funding. Given the Salvation Army's mission of serving others through biblical principles grounded in Jesus Christ, lawsuits arise over the funding. Salvation Army clients have the option when receiving Salvation Army assistance to participate in services that critics claim force religion on a government-provided service. There are also lawsuits because of employees feel forced to share the same beliefs as their employer. The only Salvation Army program that does not seem to receive government funding is the rehabilitation program. Many SA offices rely on their thrift store revenue to fund that particular program.

The United Way

The United Way chapters have a long history with local Salvation Armies. The participating United Way agency either gives a certain percentage from its annual campaign efforts or United Way donors allocate their UW donation to the Salvation Army.

Although United Way funding remains a main source across the United States, there are Salvation Army districts severing their UW partnerships. Decreased allocation funds are the prime source for the separation.

Foundations

Salvation Army chapters also receive funding from foundations. Often this type of funding comes from corporate foundations. Foundation examples include Nationwide and Wendy's International. Civic clubs such as Rotary or Kiwanis also have foundations, a campaign effort or an annual donation that goes to their local Salvation Army. Educational outlets such as the Ohio Department of Education also are foundational funding partners. Banks and investment groups also are a source of Salvation Army funding.

Public Donations

Salvation Army budgets depend on public donations. The Red Kettle drive each Christmas season is a prime outlet for public giving. Salvation Army chapters also have direct mail campaigns. Families also opt for their planned giving to benefit the Salvation Army. This is accomplished through wills, trusts, annuities or consistent donations as the family desires.

Stickley Furniture Identification

The simple look of a Mission desk

The most valuable Stickley Furniture, prized by antique collectors and sought after at auctions, was designed by the American furniture-maker and architect Gustav Stickley between 1900 and 1915. It should not be confused with the furniture designed by his four brothers or other manufacturers--particularly those companies of the same period who were mass-producing furniture predominantly in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Slated backs and seats are characteristics of Mission furniture.

Gustav Stickley created furniture that emphasized craftsmanship and simplicity, earmarks of the Mission style, which challenged the ornateness of the Victorian period. Stickley, who lived from 1858 to 1942, became the artistic founder and major creator of Mission style. At his manufacturing facility In New York, he developed techniques that combined large-scale factory production with that of individual craftsmen who assembled and finished the pieces. Gustav Stickley disdained the shoddy, mass-produced pieces that were available to the growing middle class of his day.

Design Elements

Grain was emphasized in Mission furniture.

G. Stickley's "Craftsman furniture," as he called it, had little decoration except for corbels--a type of architectural support--that added strength to overhanging table tops and heavy chair arms. He used only American hardwoods, specifically red or white oak, and developed techniques that highlighted the grain in woods. His chairs and tables were straight-legged; and his chairs and couches had slated backs. He used hammered nail-heads for his dark-leather upholstery; and his pulls, latches and hinges were most often hand-made pewter or copper.

Identification

Because there were many imitations of Gustav Stickley's designs, he marked his furniture with decals, brands and/or paper labels. He first used the decal, a design imprinted on special paper used to transfer it, in 1902. He signed the decals in a rectangular box beneath the image of an inverted horseshoe. His decals were in shades of red; and his paper labels were whitish and larger: up to 4 by 6 inches. These identifying marks are located under table tops and on the center backs of bookcases, cabinets and sideboards. They can also be found inside drawers and underneath chair cushions and chair arms, unless the piece was refinished or reupholstered--in which cases, marks may have been removed.

Missing Marks

Sometimes pieces believed to be that of G. Stickley's are found, but the identifying marks are missing. First be certain such markings are, in fact, absent. Take the piece outside in the sunlight or use a flashlight indoors to examine it. Sometimes a shadow exists where markings once were. When nothing is found, study the piece for G. Stickley's construction methods and consult Gustav Stickley's catalog.

Types

Gustav Stickley produced a wide range of furniture, including several types of chairs, from rocking to straight-back and Morris-style reclining chairs with adjustable backs. He manufactured one- and two-door cabinets, sideboards, servers, writing desks and even hex (six-sided) tables.

Get Rid Of Home Office Clutter

Shred old paperwork to eliminate clutter.

The home office is an area that can quickly accumulate massive amounts of clutter. Whether it be paperwork or books and other trinkets, these items can quickly deteriorate the overall look and functionality of your office space. You often do not want to get rid of the clutter, but instead find a way to keep it in your office space while keeping it safely stored away and out of sight. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Run all unnecessary paperwork and documents through the paper shredder. Often people hesitate when discarding paperwork as it often contains personal and business information that could get into the wrong hands. Shredding the paperwork allows you to get rid of it safely. Alternately, burn the paperwork outdoors in a fire pit.

2. Filter through old books.Often you will find many books that you simply no longer need. Donate the books or pass them along to your friends.

3. Organize documents and paperwork. Use file folders labeled in categories that allow you to easily locate the items when needed.

4. Place storage bins throughout the office as needed. These bins are available for anything from pencil holders to magazine holders, so figure out what is needed to store all similar items in one central location.

5. Remove dirt and dust. Use a vacuum to clean flooring, and use a smaller hand-held vacuum or electronics vacuum to clean around power cords and electronics. Dust the desk, shelves and similar surfaces with a cleaning rag and furniture cleaner.

The Best Leather Office Chairs

Finding the best leather office chair depends on size, style and budget.

Leather office chairs offer comfort and a soothing place to sit while you take on the world. Leather is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. For the beleaguered worker, a leather office chair can ease a stressful day. For the design-conscious, a leather chair adds elegance to a home office. Finding the best leather office chair is a matter of style, size and budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Styles

Leather office chairs come in many different styles, such as traditional and modern. A traditional leather office chair may be more plush, while a modern chair may be designed with ergonomic comfort in mind. Whatever style you choose should be one that fits with your decor, so take a careful look at your desk and office, before making a selection. For example, if you have a mission-style home, look for a leather office chair that has a honey-colored wood frame and numerous slats on the side to match the Craftsman style. The best style will be the one that's most efficient for you and the one that fits best with your decor. You'll have to decide on the right wood color or metal finish, and the right leather color as well.

Sizes

The best leather office chair will fit well in your work space. Leather office chairs range from small, skinny slingbacks and petite task chairs to large, stuffed executive wing back chairs. The best chair will be the one that you feel is appropriate for the space, not too large or too small. To ensure that the seat will get you to the right height for your desk, try out a few chairs and measure the height of your desk and the available space for you and a chair at the desk.

Budget

The range of prices for leather office chairs runs from less than $100 to more than $1,000, as of 2011. The best leather office chair will be the one that fits your budget. On the low end, leather office chairs are easy to find at discount stores such as Office Depot for between $50 and $400, as of March 2011. On the higher end, at furniture stores such as Ethan Allen, leather office chairs range between $500 and $1,300. Prices vary due to the brand, the quality of materials and the construction. Consignment shops and garage sales may have leather office chairs as well. You'll find some real bargains there, as as well as at used furniture stores that carry office furniture.

Other Considerations

The best leather office chairs require other considerations. One important aspect is whether to get a leather office chair with or without arms. Only you can make that decision. A chair without arms will slide beneath your desk, which is an important space saver. Another consideration is leather quality and finish, such as a smooth or pebbled finish. Top quality leather can last a lifetime, while lower quality leather may be just fine for a few years, which will be adequate if that's all you're looking to get out of your chair. Extra features to take into account include built-in chair massagers and heaters. Most office chairs come with wheel casters, but you may prefer one that doesn't move. The best leather office chair will be the one that enables you to work in comfort and style.

How Unlock Jiraiya On Naruto Arena

Jiraiya is one of many unlockable characters in the online multiplayer game "Naruto Arena." Like other secret characters, Jiraiya can be used by winning missions while certain ninjas are on your team. Shino must be on your team to unlock Jiraiya. Missions in "Naruto Arena" are passive and do not affect the actual game. Instead, they must be activated on the "Naruto Arena" host website. Depending on your rating, or "ninja level," in "Naruto Arena," some missions are not available until you have won more online battles.

Instructions

1. Go to the "Naruto Arena" host website to access the mission database. Find missions by clicking on the sidebar labeled "Ninja Missions" at the top of the screen.

2. Start any mission that allows the player to have Aburame Shino in your party by clicking on the desired mission. Since many missions only require one or two ninjas in your party, find a mission that allows space for a third ninja. This way, you can include Aburame Shino.

Make Square Holes For Mission Furniture

Homeowners decorate their homes with mission-style furniture to exhibit a simple design. Mission-style furniture has straight lines, free of carvings or ornate decorations. Mission furniture makers assemble furniture pieces with mortise-and-tenon joinery to create a sleek style of construction. Tenons have a square or rectangular tongue at the end of rails, top of legs, chair rungs or any two pieces that join. A mortise, the second half of the joint, is a square or rectangular hole cut into the wood support and fits the tenon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Cutting by Hand

1. Measure the size of the tenon and note the measurements. Draw guidelines on the wood support matching the tenon measurements with a pencil.

2. Align a metal straightedge to the lines and score them with a utility knife. Measure the width of the mortise and mark the halfway point down the center with a pencil. Place the wood piece in a vise with the scored lines facing up and tighten the vise.

3. Equip a power drill with a doweling jig that is 1/16-inch smaller than the width of the mortise. Place the tip of the doweling jig onto the line marking the halfway point and drill into the wood, matching the depth to the length of the tenon. Do not allow the doweling jig to move to the outside of the guidelines. Move the doweling jig down the centerline slightly overlapping the first hole and drill another hole. Continue to drill overlapping holes until holes fill inside the lines of the mortise.

4. Hold a wood chisel that is 1/16-inch smaller than the width of the mortise on the guideline with the tip slightly angled to the center of the mortise. Strike the chisel with a wood mallet to chip out the center of the mortise. Continue to angle the wood chisel toward the center of the mortise and strike it with a wood mallet until no excess wood remains inside the mortise.

5. Wrap 80-grit sandpaper around a piece of wood that is 1/2-inch smaller than the mortise and sand the inside of the mortise smooth.

Cutting with a Mortiser

6. Measure and mark mortise guidelines on the wood with a pencil.

7. Equip a mortising machine with combination hollow chisel and auger bit.

8. Place the wood piece onto the mortiser, align it to the bit and clamp it in place. Set the mortiser's depth stop to the appropriate depth. Set the fence to keep the bit within the guidelines of the mortise.

9. Turn on the mortiser and pull the lever down to cut a square hole within the mortise guideline. Move the wood along the mortiser's fence, pull the lever down and cut a second square hole slightly overlapping the first hole. Continue to move the wood along the fence and cut successive, overlapping square holes until no wood remains inside the mortise.

10. Wrap 80-grit sandpaper around a piece of wood that is 1/2-inch smaller than the mortise and sand the inside of the mortise smooth.

Measure For Wroughtiron Gate Rails

Wrought iron gates give properties a solid, elegant look.

Wrought iron gates create an elegant, traditional note for driveways, entranceways and yard. These gates are often fabricated by local metal shops, but do-it-yourselfers with knowledge of welding and other metalworking equipment can create their own gates in either complex scrollwork or simple, Mission-style designs. If you plan on fabricating a wrought iron gate for your property, you must consider some basic features of the gate, such as the height, the space between rails and how the gate will swing after installation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a plumb line to determine the plumb, or straightness, of the walls or posts that will hold the gate panels. This will warn you about disparities in measurement that may occur.

2. Measure the open, horizontal span where the gate will be by holding the tape 2 inches above the ground. Write down this number

3. Measure the horizontal span at the level of the highest point of the gate. Write this number down. A discrepancy between the lower measurement and the higher measurement means that the two sides are not plumb. You will have to fabricate the gate to the smaller dimension, and add shims to provide additional material on one or the other side to allow for installation.

4. Subtract the measured width of the hinge assembly from the width of the gate opening that you measured in Step 3.

5. Subtract from the number in Step 4 the width of the vertical post on either end of the perimeter frame of the gate. The number that remains is the space available for the pickets, or rails, of your gate and the spaces that separate them.

6. Calculate the number of rails and spaces that will fit into this number. For instance, if you have 1-inch rails and 4-inch spaces, you must calculate how many 5-inch units can be fitted into the remaining number. You can adjust this to fit whatever size material you wish to use, such as ½-inch rails or pickets. You can also adjust the amount of spacing between rails.

Couch Facts

Couches are for relaxing.

Most contemporary homes have at least one couch in them. A couch is a comfortable place for more than one person to sit, or for a single person to lay down and have an afternoon nap. Couches have become synonymous with relaxation and even laziness, resulting in such terms as "couch potato" to describe people with little ambition. Does this Spark an idea?

Sizes

Couches range in size from love seats, designed for two people, all the way up to sectional couches that can fill half a room and seat up to a dozen people. Some couches are designed to be placed in limited spaces such as a studio apartment, while others are enormous and imposing and meant to be part of a very large living room. Couches with removable pillows on their backs can have the pillows taken off to provide a larger horizontal surface for more comfortable resting and sleeping.

Styles

Virtually every style of furniture has included a couch or sofa of some kind. Mission style couches feature exposed side panels and feet made of quartersawn oak, with brown leather cushions and backs. Modernist couches are made of black leather with polished chrome feet. Victorian couches often featured rich, patterned materials, overstuffed cushions and fringes that hid the legs. Colonial style couches, popular in the 1970s, were made with knotty pine stained a dark brown, and cushions that were livened up with plaid or flowered patterns.

Materials

Most couches feature cushions that are covered with either leather or some kind of woven material. Some couches have exposed wood or metal arms and legs, while others hide their framework beneath the upholstery. Antique couches were stuffed with everything from bird feathers to straw ticking to wool, but most modern couches are padded with foam rubber. The best and most expensive couches are upholstered in durable cowhide, and last far longer than less expensive couches made with cheaper materials.

Uses

Couches are used for any activity that involves sitting for an extended period, something that would become uncomfortable on a hard wooden chair. Many people use their couch to watch television for hours every day. Couches can also be used to seat guests for entertaining. Guests can also sleep on the couch if it's big enough; some couches are designed for this and fold out into a bed. In households where it's allowed, dogs love to take over the couch for their bed.

Make A Model Of Mission San Juan Bautista

Missions typically feature thick walls and arches.

Building a model of the one of the old Spanish missions in California is a common homework assignment for elementary school students in the state. California content standards ask public schools to teach about the missions as a part of the fourth grade history curriculum and that's when most of the state's students first learn about the Spanish missionaries who founded a string of iconic adobe churches and settlements in California in the 1700s and 1800s. For students in the San Francisco Bay Area, nearby Mission San Juan Bautista is a popular focus for study.

Instructions

1. Look for details such as bell towers.

Check textbooks for pictures of Mission San Juan Bautista. Look at the sketches of the mission on the website of the Library of Congress. (See Resources.) Note the main features of California mission style such as thick adobe walls, rows of arches, bell towers, decorative tiles, white walls and deep red tile roofs.

2. Decide how big the model should be.

Decide how big the model should be. To make things simple, if a wall of the actual mission is 180 feet long and 10 feet tall, make that same wall on the model mission 18 inches long and 10 inches tall. Keep all other measurements to the same scale.

3. Sketch the outline of the mission's floor plan on the foam board. Note that the shape of the floor plan for the main church at San Juan Bautista will be rectangular, while the floor plan for the entire mission will be L-shaped.

4. Construct the walls of the mission from cardboard. Measure and cut the cardboard according to scale, then glue the pieces in place following the outline on the foam board. Coat the cardboard with a thick layer of white poster paint. To suggest arches and windows, paint them on using black poster paint.

5. Mission San Juan Bautista has red tile roofs.

Strip the top layer off the remaining cardboard, exposing the corrugated layer in the middle. The corrugated ridges will resemble the layers of tiles on the roofs of Mission San Juan Bautista. Paint the roof pieces red and glue them on top of the walls.

6. Add details to the model such as decorative tiles and a bell tower. Have fun selecting details that are both accurate and interesting. The historical notes on the website of Old Mission San Juan Buatista, for instance, describe a small hole in one of the missions doors that was built specifically for the mission's cat. (See Resources.)

7. Oak trees are part of the landscape near San Juan Bautista.

Decorate the landscape with walking paths and vegetation. To make oak trees, cover round chunks of a kitchen sponge in green poster paint and stick in toothpicks for trunks. To capture the parched look of the California summer landscape, dab some pale yellow paint on the base board.

Find Discontinued American Drew Furniture

The American Drew furniture company was founded in 1927 and produces a wide variety of medium- to medium high-priced home furnishings. Over its history, the company has featured many different lines of dining room, bedroom, and occasional furnishings, including lines designed by Bob Mackie and Jessica McClintock. Discontinued pieces are highly sought after because of their quality of design and construction. There are several avenues for finding these discontinued pieces on the secondary market. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Go to garage sales and estate sales. Check your local paper for garage sales. If you do not subscribe to the paper, look online for the publication's classified section. To maximize your chances of finding something good, look for sales that list several articles of furniture rather than just one or two. If the ad includes a phone number or email address, contact the seller to find out if he has any American Drew pieces. Estate sales are another good option for finding large quantities of used furniture. The website The Estate Sale Network lets you hunt for estate sales by state.

2. Hunt on the Internet. Searching online offers more opportunities to find discontinued furniture without the legwork of going to garage sales and estate sales. Two of the most popular places to find used goods are eBay and Craigslist. Both of these sites let you geographically target your search so that you can avoid paying the high cost of shipping furniture. Also, check the online classified ads for your local paper. These ads are a great way of finding furniture for sale in your area.

3. Explore antiques and collectibles stores. These days many antiques and collectibles stores include used furniture as part of their inventories. This makes them a worthwhile avenue when looking for discontinued pieces. Let the owners of these stores know what types of furnishings you are interested in, and leave your contact information so they can reach you if something relevant comes into stock.

4. Attend auctions. Like estate sales, auctions often include large quantities of furniture at bargain prices. To find auctions in your area, consult Auctionzip.com. It is worth the time to contact the auction house before the event to ask for a list of inventory to be sold. This will help you determine if American Drew pieces are included in the sale.

5. Connect with other collectors. People looking for pieces of American Drew furniture are often the most knowledgeable regarding out-of-the-ordinary ways to find pieces. Communicating with other collectors through online message boards is a great way to find specific pieces you are hunting for. "Furniture World" magazine offers a message board for consumers and those in the trade to post inquiries.

Grants For An Emerging Visual Artist

Emerging visual artists, those beginning to gain a reputation in their field, can benefit from various grants encouraging new artistic expression. The visual arts encompass painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, drawing and film--those arts appreciated initially by the eye. Grants are competitive, but awards aid in bringing an artistic vision to fruition.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts

Founded by artist Jasper Johns and musician John Cage, in 1963, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts offers annual grants for promising new artists working in the visual arts; as well as music, dance, theater and poetry. In addition, its Emergency Grants program provides monies to complete projects for visual artists with "unanticipated, sudden opportunities to present their work to the public." The Emergency Grants are only for work, and cannot be used to pay for medical or other personal emergencies.

Claire Weiss Emerging Artist Award

Administered through the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the Claire Weiss Emerging Artist Award is named for the department's late curator of public art. Each year, an emerging artist receives a $7,000 grant, after submitting a proposal of an outdoor sculpture for a park overseen by the department. Park locations change annually, with artistically under-served neighborhoods receiving first priority. Grant winners are encouraged to find additional funding and in-kind support for project completion.

Durham Arts Council

In North Carolina, the Durham Arts Council offers several grants for emerging visual artists. Eligible artists are chosen only from those residing, for at least one year prior to application, in Durham, Chatham, Granville, Person or Orange counties in the state. Grant criteria include project feasibility, overall artistic talent, contribution to professional artistic development and commitment to the particular art form. Monies may be used for materials, project-related travel, publicity, training and research.

Puffin Foundation Ltd.

Offered to artists of specific disciplines, the grants of the Puffin Foundation Ltd. are given in two-year cycles. Every other year, grants are available in music, theater and photography, followed the next year by video, fine arts and dance. Averaging between $1,000 and $2,500, grants are aimed at emerging artists "whose works might have difficulty being aired due to their genre and/or social philosophy." Eligible visual artists must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status.

Repair Bedroom Furniture

Bedroom furniture can take a beating.

Bedroom furniture includes any type of functional furniture within a bedroom. Bedroom furniture can become easily damaged over time. Dresser drawers are opened on a daily basis, and joints or hardware may become loose and worn. Surfaces can get scratched and may need cosmetic repairs too. Buying new bedroom furniture can be expensive. Repairing bedroom furniture can save money in the long run. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cabinet hardware

Move items from furniture surfaces being repaired and place them out of the way of the repair site. Remove clothes from drawers. Remove all hardware when repairing drawers and cabinets, and place hardware in storage containers. Do not mix up individual hardware from different pieces of furniture.Take a piece of masking tape, put it on a container and with a magic marker, write down the piece of furniture the hardware is from.

2. Battery-operated screwdriver

Remove hardware and screws from inside cabinet and dresser drawers. Use a battery-operated screwdriver, and make sure the appropriate size head fits the screw. Place hardware and screws inside the labeled container.

3. Sand furniture with an electric sander.

Put old newspaper around the floor of the bedroom furniture being repaired. Open up windows for proper ventilation. Put on plastic or cotton disposable gloves, and wear a dust mask to protect from wood dust inhalation. Sand furniture that is worn, scratched or damaged with an electric sander. Sand evenly in the direction of the grain. Remove wood dust with a tack cloth or clean paint brush.

4. Furniture glue

Repair gouges in wood bedroom furniture with wood filler. Slightly overfill the gouge with the wood filler, and remove excess filler with a putty knife. Let filler dry, and sand surface lightly with coarse sandpaper that is 100 to 150-grit. Remove dust with tack cloth. Glue lifted pieces of wood back into place with furniture glue. Apply slight pressure when gluing and let dry. Sand away excess glue with sandpaper. Remove wood dust with tack cloth.

5. Fix lifted or blistered veneer by placing a damp, old cloth over the blister. Take a hot iron and steam-heat the veneer blister by placing the iron on top of cloth for a few minutes. Remove iron and cloth. Use a putty knife to scrape away the melted blister. Place wood glue under the edges of lifted or slit veneer. Take a small paint roller, and go over the re-glued area with the roller. Clean excess glue with a clean rag. Let glue dry.

6. 320-grit sandpaper

Reinforce a loose furniture joint by fully disassembling it. Clean both parts of the joint of old glue with 320-grit sandpaper. Remove wood dust with a tack cloth, or clean paint brush. Re-glue the joint with epoxy wood glue or regular wood glue, and clamp in place. Let dry overnight.

7. Fully repaired and painted bedroom furniture

Stain or paint wood furniture using products made for wood. Use a latex enamel-based paint or a water-based stain. Dip a paint brush into paint or stain, and apply to furniture, in even strokes. Apply a second coat after the first coat dries. Let dry. Seal furniture with a polyurethane finish.

Southwestern Wall Colors

Look for southwestern color inspiraton in indigenous plants.

Color palettes in southwestern design range from the brilliant blues and reds influenced by Mexican decor to wispy pinks and yellows inspired by the desert landscape. Earth tone wall colors may reflect a more traditional rustic scheme while bolder colors may represent a more updated and urban appeal. Your southwestern wall color options include much more than Navajo white and sage green paint. Does this Spark an idea?

Sunset Colors

Sunsets in the desert and mountainous landscapes of the southwest are a display of intense shades of yellow, red and orange. Draw from these colors for a lively design scheme. Select a golden yellow paint with an orange tint for walls that accentuate strong architectural details, such as kiva fireplaces and arched doorways. Paint the walls red, and glaze them with a yellow tint for a more dynamic look. Use a contrasting color for the trim for visual interest.

Desert Colors

Sandy pinks and pale shades of brown add a sense of quietude to southwestern decor. Use these colors for the walls to balance the deep greens, rich reds and sharp blues in fabrics with strong graphic patterns. Spanish and Mexican influences on southwestern design include a multitude of colors and textures. The paler desert tones keep the color palette in check.

Mountain Colors

The mountains of the southwest are filled with shadowy grays, grassy greens, dusty browns and smoky shades of white. Use these colors for your walls to accent leather furniture, granite counter and table tops, and whitewashed hardwood floors. Sage green is a traditional southwestern paint color, but don't discount the fresher leafy greens or richer grassy greens. To complement southwestern artworks, use quiet grays or subdued whites. The dusty browns of rock and gravel work well with earth-toned granites and leather furniture.

Urban Colors

The distinctive architecture of southwestern metropolitan areas suggests orange-pinks and yellowish blues, celery greens and lemon yellows. Select from these colors to complement the traditional styling of the pueblo with its parapets, the Hacienda architecture with its courtyards and the Mission style with its ceiling beams and casement windows. The interiors of urban homes in the southwest reflect the exterior architecture. Use the orange-pink for a traditional native style, the blues and greens for a rustic appeal and the sunny yellow to brighten a style emphasizing the earth-toned Mission style of design.

Landscape Colors

The home landscapes in the southwest emphasize the use of indigenous plant life. Draw inspiration from the green of the cacti, the flowers of succulents and the delicate purple of the Texas sage flower. Paint the walls using colors found in the garden, such as sweet pepper orange, tomatillo green or summer squash yellow.

Building Furniture With Books

Old books can become the building blocks for furniture.

Making furniture from books is a bit akin to making it from cardboard, but perhaps with a lot more personality. It's possible to construct furniture from books and some artists do just that, making a broad range of pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Why Books

For book lovers, the reason behind using books as building blocks for furniture is logical. Books hold a special place in the hearts of these folks and, as such, this type of furniture makes great gifts. These pieces represent a one-of-a-kind piece, which was intended specifically for the receiver.

Types

While it may not be feasible to construct all of a home's furniture from books, some household items lend themselves to this form of construction. Coffee and end tables represent some of the most obvious examples. According to the "New York Times," artist Jim Rosenau also creates bookcases and bookshelves from books.

Book Art

Although not exactly furniture, other household items can be constructed from books, including some interesting sculptures and pieces of artwork.

Fig Tree Species

Figs are an important commercial fruit crop.

Fig trees (Ficus carica) are native to Western Asia. They have been cultivated for thousands of years; neolithic sites dating to 5000 B.C. have yielded ancient fruit remnants. Fig trees are widely cultivated in warm climates around the world. Does this Spark an idea?

Fig trees usually grow between 10 and 30 feet tall, but they can reach heights up to 50 feet. They have shallow, spreading roots, multiple spreading branches and large bright-green palmate leaves, or leaves that are shaped like the palm of a hand, with between five and seven lobes. Fig trees produce specialized "fruits" called synconiums; the plant's flower is enclosed within the inside wall of the fruit. Common fig trees produce female flowers that do not require pollination, but tiny wasps pollinate other varieties such as the caprifig, Smyrna and San Pedro fig species.

Types

A number of fig cultivars are commonly planted in the United States. Black Mission, a type of tree from the Balearic Islands, produces elongated black fruits with pink or reddish flesh. Brown Turkey figs are native to Provence, France. Their fruit has brownish-purple skin and pinkish- or amber-colored flesh, while Kadota fig trees produce fruits with yellowish-green skin and amber flesh. Other cultivars including the Celeste, Croisic and Adriatic varieties are also available.

Considerations

The California Rare Fruit Growers website warns against planting figs in small places because of their wide, spreading crowns and roots. Pruning fig trees is not recommended because it limits their crop size. They require full sunlight and well-drained soil. Figs are susceptible to damage from small roundworms in the soil called nematodes that feed on roots. They are also vulnerable to fungal infections such as botrytis blight and cercospora leaf spot.

Make Wood Dollhouses

Children and adults alike enjoy creating doll houses from wood. The miniatures industry nets millions annually, providing scaled reproductions of furniture, flatware, tableware, lighting, wall, floor and window coverings, landscaping and yard decorations. Wooden doll houses range in complexity from detailed post-Victorian reproductions, complete with electric chandeliers, Aubusson carpets, and Wedgwood china, to simple, open sided doll houses with four or eight rooms divided by thin wood or metal walls, with an occasional door or window opening.

Instructions

1. Decide what type wooden doll house you wish to make. Victorian, modern, rustic and Medieval are all popular choices. Medieval doll houses are made to look like castles or crofts. Rustic doll houses can be log cabins, clapboard salt boxes or stucco mission homes. Decide how many rooms your wood doll house will have, and how they will be arranged.

Most Victorians are two-story townhouses, with the kitchen, living room, dining room and laundry or pantry downstairs, three bedrooms and a bath upstairs, with a possible garret under the eaves. Every room has its own fireplace, complete with an ornate mantel. Victorians also have front and rear staircases, which allow the servants to perform their duties without interfering with the family and their guests.

Modern homes usually contain a living room/dining area, a pass-through kitchen, two bathrooms, and two or more bedrooms. They have low-pitched, nearly flat roofs and cantilevered balconies overlooking outdoor patios or breezeways.

Rustic homes, with the exception of castles, typically have one big room, or a room divided by canvas or cloth walls. The log cabins often had a single loft upstairs, and at least one fireplace.

2. Cut the walls for your chosen doll house. Use 1/4-inch thick Masonite or plywood. Lay out door and window holes with a marker and cut them with a jig saw. Sand all walls smooth. Glue quarter-round cove molding across the inside of each side wall of the doll house, with the horizontal side facing the roof, at room height for each story of the house, to support the floors between each level. According to doll house maker Jennifer Brooks, this is the most effective way to support the upper floors. Assemble doll house walls using a tack hammer and half inch long finishing nails. Do not drive side wall nails all the way in until after the floors have been placed across the cove molding supports. Frame all doorways and windows. Apply clear silicone adhesive to horizontal surfaces of cove molding supports. Tap or slide the floors into place between the side walls. Wipe away any excess silicone adhesive.

3. Paint or wallpaper all walls. Paint any needed wall effects, such as sponging, stenciling, marbling or stone patterns. Create crown molding, baseboards, wainscoting and chair rails as needed. Many hardware and craft stores carry these products in miniature, already manufactured.

4. Add details such as light fixtures, wiring, plumbing fixtures, furniture and household goods. Find dolls the right scale for your house. Create period and style-appropriate window coverings. Connect any needed wiring and plumbing, building soffits where needed to hide utilities. (Soffits are the enclosed area above wall-mounted cabinets and are used to run electric lines, computer cables, phone lines and plumbing while keeping them out of the way and out of sight.) Place all items to their best effect.

5. Paint and finish the exterior of the wood doll house in whatever aesthetically pleasing way fits the era of the home. Add window boxes, flowers, trees and shrubs around the base of the doll house.

Arts & Crafts Era Furniture

The Arts and Crafts style, also known as Mission style in the United States, was born out of a protest to factory work in late 19th-century England. The Arts and Crafts style embraced artisanship and skill. Factory-produced furniture of that time was often ugly and of poor quality, and the Arts and Crafts movement aimed to provide an alternative. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

The intent of the Arts and Crafts movement was to provide consumers with beautiful furniture made by hand by fine craftsmen. The goal was to create furniture "for the people and by the people, and a source of pleasure to the maker and the user," according to Art, Design and Visual Thinking. It was supposed to be a win/win situation with ordinary people being able to surround themselves with beautiful furniture while providing a decent and fulfilling living for the furniture maker.

Effects

The English Arts and Crafts furniture makers used ideas from Medieval European, Islamic and Japanese sources for inspiration. The furniture featured stylized decorative motifs, according to Art, Design and Visual Thinking. While the intent was for Arts and Crafts furniture to be for the ordinary citizen, it turned out that only the very wealthy could afford to buy this high-quality, handmade furniture. The market for this furniture was small, and so was the need for furniture makers. It appeared as if the movement would end here.

Significance

American ingenuity prevailed, however, with New York's Gustav Stickley, who was not going to see this idea die. He wanted to create furniture for the middle class consumer who cared about furniture and wanted something nice. Stickley's idea was to combine the factory with the artisan by using factories to produce the basic parts of furniture and having the craftsmen finish it.

Considerations

Stickley's Arts and Crafts furniture was not as ornate as his English predecessors' were. His designs used clean, simple, rectangular lines with a pureness of function. The term Mission became interchangeable with American Arts and Crafts. Mission refers to the American Southwest and Hispanic styles. Sometimes Native American and Spanish designs grace this furniture.

Benefits

Stickley's notion was that furniture should be "honest." The gaudiness and shoddy pieces readily available during the early 20th century in America inspired him to do better. While his wood was high quality, his design sensibility of combining beauty with function is what made his furniture sought-after then and still desired a century later.

Build A Relationship Between A Church & The Community

Fill your church with community members for whom you can be an effective outreach and ministry.

Making your church's presence known in the community is the start of expanding your ministry and appealing to families and individuals who can benefit from the ministerial and practical resources your congregation has to offer. Reaching out to the communities around your church also helps you to fulfill the command of Jesus recorded in Mark 16:15: "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." Building lasting relationships with the community is also a matter of meeting the needs that are specific to the part of town where the church is located.

Instructions

1. Research the community where the church is located to determine the numbers of families with young children, the number of senior citizens, and the number of schools.

2. Pray, asking God how you can do your part to improve the relationship between the church and the community. This principle is based on 1 Corinthians 12:4: "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord." Ask the Lord to reveal your specific abilities and talents to you, so you'll know if you have the gift of hospitality that will make people feel welcomed in your church, or if you're more of a behind-the-scenes type -- someone who perhaps should be in charge of the activity-planning process.

3. Talk to or email your pastor or appropriate church leaders to inquire about the community outreach projects that are already in place. This will give you an idea of which programs are working, and how you might submit your ideas and suggestions. If you're also a leader in the church, your inquiries will give you more direction about whom to ask for assistance in your community relation efforts.

4. Contact your local government officials to get concrete information on the community where your church exists. For instance, ask the mayor how many married couples reside there, so you have statistical ammunition for talking to family ministry leaders at your church about putting together marriage seminars and inviting non-church members. Ask about the condition and needs of local schools and community centers as well, so your church can donate supplies for improvement projects. Church members may also want to volunteer for minor remodeling -- e.g., painting the walls or purchasing and delivering new furniture.

5. Write down activities and ideas you feel would be effective in connecting the church with the rest of the community. For instance, if summertime is coming up, a family fun day in the church's parking lot with dunking booths and traditional "fair food" can be an ideal event. Or perhaps your church can deliver home-cooked meals to the senior citizens living in the community on a certain day of the week.

6. Schedule a meeting with the church members who can best help you carry out your community-building project. For instance, you can approach fellow members who are educators to ask them to help you host a book-and-school-supplies drive for children in the community at the end of summer. Or talk to some of the teenagers and young adults in the church to get their feedback on hosting a block party sponsored by the church, geared toward community members in their age group. Take everyone's ideas into consideration, and come up with a date, a decision on how often the events will take place (monthly, annually, bi-annually), and a plan for advertise the event.

7. Ask local businesses if you can leave flyers at their establishments to let people know about the church-sponsored community event. Include your church's contact information on the flyer, including service times. Encourage locals to visit the church during the times the congregation worships, a step which will potentially boost membership.

Diy Floor Jack Repair

The most common problem mechanics run into with their hydraulic floor jacks is to have a leaky floor jack. When this happens, the main question is whether or not the floor jack is worth repairing. In some cases, the jack is so inexpensive to begin with, that a mechanic or do-it-yourselfer will choose to simply replace the product instead. Does this Spark an idea?

Checking Fluid Levels

The first step is no different than going through a simple car repair. Most mechanics start with the simplest of things to determine what the problem actually is and how serious (or expensive) the problem will be to fix (for example, checking spark plugs and wires, fluids and fuses).

Start with a systematic approach. Check the fluid level and then check the valve for pitting or obstructions. Make sure there are no major or obvious cracks in the cylinder wall and that there is no sign that there has been a fire.

What if it has Fluid? Trouble-Shooting Tips

If it does have fluid, the next question is whether or not the valve ball has dirt inside of it. The problem could also be a plugged vent. If this is the case, the O-rings may have to be replaced. If all else fails, give the pump piston a sharp smack and this may cure the problem all together. Doing this will cause a pressure spike and may help to clear the valves and ports or any air that is trapped inside.

Venting

The cylinder must be ventilated periodically. This can be done by positioning the oil fill hole and remove the plug from the fill hole in order to vent the air. If the air in the jack is compressed, the jack will not lift a load if it is air-bound.

Prevention and Care

Taking preventative measures to take good care of the floor jack is the best way to keep it working properly. At times, the jack will not be in use. If this is the case, make sure the lifting arm and the pump lever is in the full down position. Doing this will ensure that the machined surfaces of the ram and piston are protected from corrosion. The container should always be filled with seven ounces of hydraulic jack oil. The jack should be kept clean and well-lubricated.

What Is A Grand Marshal

A grand marshal hosts and typically leads a parade in a vehicle.

Though the title of grand marshal has origins in the military, religious and secret societies, today a grand marshal is typically regarded as a master of ceremonies, in general, and a parade leader, in particular. In both cases, it is a position of leadership and widely considered an honor whether the title is bestowed upon a person for a day or a longer term.

Duties

In religious and societal organizations, the grand marshal typically acts as a meeting chairperson or master of ceremonies for a special event. The most common duty of a grand marshal is leading a parade procession, and this usually involves some degree of pomp and circumstance to celebrate the parade's commencement and honor the grand marshal. Depending on the nominating organization, the grand marshal may also be involved with the overall planning of the parade.

Qualifications

Grand marshal is an informal title of rank, so specific qualifications depend on the organization. In general, as a position of honor, a grand marshal is chosen for her exceptional leadership qualities. A local organization often chooses someone within its community who has performed a heroic task or brought awareness to the organization's mission. On a national level, a grand marshal usually has the added credential of some level of celebrity, such as that of an athlete or entertainer.

Purpose

As an honorary position, a grand marshal largely serves a public relations purpose. Both local and national organizations can boost interest in their missions by bestowing the honor upon someone who will elicit media coverage and inspire people to join in the festivity, as well as the organization itself. The purpose is often more altruistic, however. Because the grand marshal himself is often covered in the news, other people can be exposed to and inspired by his example of leadership.

Famous Examples

The Tournament of Roses Parade began as a promotional effort by the local Valley Hunt club in Pasadena, California, in 1890. Today, it is one of the most known and watched parades every year, celebrating Pasadena, the state of California and the United States. It also celebrates a grand marshal every year. In its infancy, grand marshals were local heroes, but as its popularity grew, grand marshals were chosen on a national level. In fact, the Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal position is arguably the most coveted. Famous past honorees include astronauts, athletes, actors, journalists, chefs, musicians and politicians, including the following recent recipients: Tom Brokaw, Regis Philbin, Bill Cosby, John Williams, Sandra Day O'Connor, George Lucas, Cloris Leachman and -- yes -- even Mickey Mouse.

Different Styles Of Wainscoting

Wainscoting can dress any room, from modern to country.

Traditionally, wainscoting consisted of a wood material that was applied to the bottom portion of a wall. Wainscoting added an architectural detail to a space and dressed up a room. Today, there are options other than wood available. MDF, veneer, PVC and polyurethane are all used to create less-expensive wainscoting. Wainscoting is also available in a number of different styles. Does this Spark an idea?

Board and Batten

Board and batten wainscoting is generally used in craftsman-style homes. Its flat panels and vertical battens illustrate simplicity. In the early days of wainscoting, the battens were added to hide the seams between the individual boards, but today, they add textural interest and design. Homeowners sometimes add a plate rail to the top of board and batten wainscoting to create a shelf for displaying decorative objects.

Raised Panel

Raised panel is the most common wainscoting style, dating back to colonial times. It immediately adds a sense of timelessness to a room. Raised panels are created by beveling the edges of the panels, giving them a sense of depth. Some homeowners opt to use the bottom rail of the panels as a baseboard, while others build a separate baseboard using several pieces of stacked molding.

Overlay Panel

Overlay panel wainscoting looks a bit like raised panel, but has been given a more elaborate design. For added texture and depth, a piece of wood is centered between the rails and stiles and is glued into place, and molding is applied to further dramatize the effect. Because it has a relatively "busy" design overlay, panel wainscoting works best in an uncluttered, sedate space.

Flat Panel

If you see wainscoting in an arts and crafts or mission-style home, it is very likely a flat-panel style. With simple, recessed flat panels and straight, clean lines, this particular style epitomizes the sparsity for which arts and crafts and mission style are known. Flat panel is also one of the easier styles of wainscoting for beginners to install.

Beadboard Panel

Beadboard panels came into vogue during the 19th-century Victorian design period and were used in less-formal settings like country cottages. Beadboard consists of a flat surface on the top and bottom of each panel with small vertical slats of wood in between. It is often finished off on both the top and bottom with a simple trim.
