Design A Lobby For A Business

When you design a lobby for your business, bear in mind its key functions. Every lobby must provide a space to hold clients, staff, or members of the public who are waiting, lounging, meeting, or filling out paperwork. Most lobbies also provide a reception desk to serve as an initial point of contact for queries and business. Lastly, some lobbies serve as a holding area for people who are not authorized to enter restricted areas freely.

Instructions

1. Estimate the maximum number of clients you will need to be able to comfortably accommodate in each part of the lobby at any given time, and scale your design accordingly.

2. Lay out the waiting or lounge area. Set it aside from the rest of the lobby, as people who are seated don't like to feel as though they're in the middle of a thoroughfare. Use comfortable chairs with non-absorbent surfaces that can be easily cleaned; this is important for public health. Avoid chairs with arms, as overweight people have trouble fitting into them, or else provide at least one bariatric (i.e., plus-sized) seating alternative such as a sofa or wide chair. Add a few tables to your seating area, and supply electrical outlets.

3. Lay out the reception area. Place the front desk prominently from the main entrance. It should be wide enough to accommodate at least two clients at a time, so that clients with urgent business can come up to the desk without pushing the other person aside. The desk will also need a counter, a fire extinguisher, hookups for power, phone, and Internet, and connections to any internal communications or security systems.

4. Install your circuit breaker and emergency command panels here, preferably behind or within the reception desk. In a restricted access business, these components should be on the controlled side of the lobby, concealed from public view.

5. Provide your lobby with suitable climate control and ventilation.

6. Customize the design to your specific needs. If there will be meetings here, provide sofas or round tables with relaxed seating. If turnstiles or other security restrictions are required, shape the lobby so that foot traffic flows will not be bottlenecked and cannot easily be bypassed.

7. Make your lobby accessible to the disabled. Use ramps instead of steps. Leave an open spot in the waiting area for a wheelchair. Make sure the reception desk has one low-counter section so that seated clients can physically see the receptionist.

8. Practice sustainable design practices. Make use of energy efficient construction, natural lighting, and recycled materials.

9. Make the client feel welcome. Use sound-absorbing panels on the walls and ceiling to create a more intimate atmosphere. Supplement overhead lighting with daylight, warm lamps, or a working fireplace. Add a few shelves for the display of conversation pieces.

10. Sell your company by avoiding design mistakes. The lobby is a place where first impressions are made. A small, sterile environment will not inspire admiration, nor will a large, empty space. A boring, angular design implies a lack of passion. Cheap furniture, carpeting, and lighting turn people off. Generic artwork on the walls suggests insincerity, while company propaganda suggests pushiness. Your lobby should be an inviting, refreshing place, even if the client will only be there momentarily.

11. Add the finishing touches. Every lobby should have tissues, at least one waste bin, a coat rack, an absorbent rug at the front door (if the main entrance connects to the outdoors), and decorations which reflect the face of the company or its people. The day's newspapers would be a nice touch, much more so than year-old magazines. Sign the exits and restroom.

Diy Outdoor Bench

DIY Outdoor Bench

What better way to relax at home in the summer than to sit on an outdoor bench that you've made yourself? A seat in the garden or back yard provides a finishing touch to an outside living area. There are many different styles of outdoor benches for decks, patios, gardens and other areas. Backless benches, mission-style benches, circular and octagonal benches surrounding trees, and bent twig benches are among many creative styles of do-it-yourself outdoor furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

Backless Benches

Minimal carpentry skills, pre-cut lumber from a home center or lumberyard, and simple tools are all you need to make benches for a deck or patio. Five planks of treated wood or cedar in whatever length is desired, framed and mounted atop four to six sturdy 4-by-4 posts, provides sturdy, long-lasting seating. Stain or paint the bench to match surrounding decking or house woodwork.

Mission-Style Benches

Intermediate carpentry skills and building plans for the mission-style bench you want, plus a weekend of construction time, are what you need to make a useful outdoor bench. Use high-quality wood like oak or teak to build this bench.

Benches Surrounding Trees

Surround trees with circular or octagonal benches. Measure the tree trunk and plan the dimensions of the bench to be 2 to 3 feet larger. Get plans from books at the library or from online sources (see References) and have seat parts cut at a lumberyard or cut them yourself with a table saw.

Bent Twig Benches

Bent twig furniture is creative, unusual and particularly suited to a rustic or garden area. Build a garden bench completely from sapling trees and branches or convert wooden garage sale or salvaged furniture into twig creations by replacing backs and arms with bent twigs and branches.

Simple Bench Construction

Build simple outdoor benches for the back yard or garden with found or salvaged materials. Salvage tree trunk pieces when removing a tree or from municipal or utility tree removal services and use them as bench bases with planks of wood. Chisel out parts of an old tree trunk to fit large rocks under it for a really rustic bench. Remove wire handles from old utility buckets, paint them brown or green and use them as bench legs with old closet doors or fence sections for the seat. Screw together three or four armless wooden chairs (found at a garage sale or salvaged) for a quick and easy bench.

Make A Dream Super Hero

Super heroes come in all shapes, sizes, genders and ages.

Since 1932, when "Superman" was conceptualized, humans have been creating a long string of awesome superheroes with incredible stories and extraordinary powers. It appears that they have been conceived by humans who dare to dream of marvelous potential that is beyond what they are accustomed to as a species. In this sense, the creation of a superhero is a supremely forward-thinking and creative process. Find some inspiration and follow the steps below to bring the world's next dream superhero into existence.

Instructions

Making a Dream Superhero

1. Create the general concept for your superhero, and start from there. Consider whether you want your superhero to be an adolescent female or a man in his 40s. Maybe your superhero could even be a feisty old man who is on a mission to avenge the murder of his sidekick dog, Apollo. Decide the basic general facts about your hero, such as age, gender and location. Take notes on all of the specifications.

2. Decide what kind of "day job" or life your hero has. Few superheroes live primarily as their superhero alter ego, and they usually have to pay the bills just like everyone else. Is your hero a nerdy high school student like Peter Parker, a born billionaire like Bruce Wayne, or a quirky Japanese schoolgirl like Sailor Moon? Consider who your hero must hide his or her alter ego from, and who is in on the secret. Record all pertinent information.

3. Write down some ideas for your hero's motivations. Attempt to do some creative writing that might touch on where his or her deeper direction springs from. Is your character driven by revenge? Is he or she aware of dark and dangerous forces and their imminent advances, and is your hero the only one with the powers to stop them? Is he merely searching for adventure? Your character's motivation is his heart and soul, so make sure to spend a fair amount of time with it.

4. Consider what type of superpowers your character may possess. Since we are working with dream superheroes, feel free to expand their abilities far beyond what is possible in this reality. Work to keep your hero's super powers in line with his or her general concept and motivation, and decide how the hero came to be endowed with the power. Was he captured and used in scientific government experiments? Did a comet crash in her backyard, exposing her to outer-planetary dust?

5. Design your hero's costume, keeping in mind whether the individual wants to get noticed, intimidate or blend in. The superhero costume is the most iconic element of your hero, and it is what people will notice before they know anything more about who he is or what he's fighting for. Make sure to be creative and thorough, and add finishing touches like accessories and gadgets to your hero's ensemble. Use your art supplies to sketch out your hero's costume and appearance. Alternately, you could use the HeroMachine 2.5 link below if you don't enjoy drawing.

6. Give your superhero a fierce, powerful or mysterious name. It should be a name that inspires wonder, fear or awe in those who hear it. Consider names like Wolverine, Storm and the Silver Surfer for inspiration.

Write A Bachelor'S Of Fine Arts Degree Project Proposal

Writing your fine arts project proposal can be simple with some advanced planning.

Students pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree are sometimes required to complete a substantial research project or a creative project that reflects their creative development as a student. Most projects require some type of research proposal that must be approved either by a committee or the student's adviser. Students sometimes struggle with where to begin their paper or proposal or properly develop the paper to meet the requirements set forth by the school. With a little careful planning, however, you can put together a proposal that will be approved.

Instructions

1. Examine the requirements of your school's art or fine arts department for writing your research proposal. Your school might not provide you with an exact roadmap of write your proposal, but it will tell you what is required as a minimum to get your proposal approved. Speak with your academic advisor or the head of the arts and sciences department to get more specific requirements or clarification regarding proposal requirements.

2. Determine the nature of your project. Projects can be research-based or they can be the result of your own creative endeavors. Students pursuing a visual arts emphasis may, for example, propose to create a series of impressionist paintings. Dance students may wish to choreograph and produce an entire dance production or musical. Fine arts projects really have no boundaries so long as they meet the school's or department's requirements and can be justified within the pages of your written proposal.

3. Perform preliminary research or begin developing your creative project in order to determine its feasibility. If you are putting together a research proposal, you will need to be able to show how the project fits within the discussion of other scholars within the field. Creative projects will require research as well; they will need to be justified against the wider context of the contemporary arts scene.

4. Examine other research proposals written by other students. Do not copy their work. Instead, your goal should be to understand the nature of the fine arts or research proposal. You can examine proposals by conducting a search online or by asking your advisor or another professor for an example. If they do not have one on file, check with the department head to see if they retain any proposals on file. You can also see if they have a basic template that you can use to construct your proposal.

5. Develop an outline that includes the key concepts and parts of your proposal. Your proposal should include an introduction that provides the reader with an idea of the project and how it will be developed. It should also include the rationale for the project, indicating why the project is important. Avoid personalizing the proposal; it should read more like a research paper. The one exception to this rule throughout the proposal is that your proposal will need to be an extension of your studies and of your personal strengths as a student. Including some biographical information is usually acceptable for this. Your proposal needs to include the scope of your work, where your research will be derived from (if applicable) and the potential for future research or creative endeavors in this field.

Shop For Southwest Decor

Plush comforters in robust colors, hand-crafted rugs illustrating rustic themes and delicate figurines depicting sacred symbols describe characteristics of southwest décor that have made it such a preference among home decorators. Even professional interior designers are drawn to the earthy southwestern style that allows them to add warmth to any room, whether in an upscale high-rise complex or a simple log cabin. You can shop online for southwest décor on sites that will send you free catalogs and even discount coupons. You can even find wholesale shops that offer special prices for bulk purchases. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Start with lamps featuring rawhide shades decorated in traditional southwestern themes: howling wolves, cactus plants, range riders and setting suns. Other good choices for lighting are candle holders made from coiled rope or weathered wood, and electric warmers burning aromatic oils. Visit sites such as http://www.missiondelrey.com/southwest-decor.html for these items.

2. Pick wall art that symbolizes everyday life in Native American tribes or venerates Navajo tribal leaders. Find buffalo headdress plaques, wall clocks made from a bull's skull, mini ceramic pots dangling from ropes and a peace pipe with an eagle's head.

3. Add warmth to your room by choosing long-lasting, pure wool Zapotec rugs and table runners woven by hand in traditional Arizona Navajo designs. The Zapotec Indians also weave southwestern tapestries which add warmth and color to your walls. Sites such as http://www.mysouthwestdecor.com/ have many of these items.

4. Find life-like figurines and sculptures to set atop a fireplace mantle. Standing between 10 and 12 inches tall, these figurines depict scenes from traditional Native American life, such as galloping horses, dancing warriors, tribal chiefs in traditional buffalo headdress and chiefs holding staff and pipe.

5. Choose hand-woven Native American baskets made from yucca or pine needles to place on mantles, shelves, occasional and dining room tables. Shop for Apache burden baskets that hang from the walls. Other popular basket types are Pueblo saucers, shallow Navajo coiled baskets and deep Navajo pattern baskets.

6. Decide on bedspreads, pillows and blankets for bedrooms and family rooms. Look for Navajo bedspreads and blankets in turquoise, brown, black and red colors or in the traditional Hopi pattern. Traditional southwestern pillow covers made from natural resin come in either Sandia, Hopi or cross patterns.

Building Wooden Chairs

Building your own wooden chair can be satisfying.

If the thought of relaxing on a hand-crafted wooden chair intrigues you, it may be time to buy some wood from your local hardware store. Many supplies stores and websites offer simple plans to help you achieve your goals of making your own wooden furniture. Do-it-yourself projects are fun and rewarding, and there is nothing like reaping the benefits of a sturdy well-built wooden chair--especially you built it.

Instructions

1. Select the style of chair you wish to build. Each style has a purpose, so decide where you want your chair to sit, and what purpose you have in mind for your piece.

2. Purchase the amount of wood necessary. Many plans state the total amount of wood needed to successfully complete the job.

3. Cut all pieces with hand or table saw and drill any holes for screws and bolts. Make sure all cutting and drilling is done at once to help save time and space in your work area.

4. Sand all pieces with medium-grain paper, working down to fine grain until smooth to the touch.

5. Fit and screw all pieces together--using a screwdriver and wrench to effectively secure nuts and bolts--to create your desired chair.

6. Varnish, polish or treat with whichever product best suits your needs and/or climate.

Make Craftsman Furniture

Making Craftsman furniture can be very rewarding.

Craftsman furniture was first exhibited to the public in 1900 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Gustav Stickley (See Reference 1) said: "The Craftsman idea makes for the development in this country of an art and architecture which shall express the spirit of the American people..." The basic principles are honesty and simplicity. Furniture should be well constructed but plain, with no needless ornamentation. Simple, durable and comfortable, Craftsman furniture is ideally made of American white oak, whose character helped to develop the style of the pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Study the plans for Craftsman furniture, such as those in Woodworker's Journal's "Craftsman Furniture Projects" (See References 2). Note the range of skills required, from drilling vertically to complex joint making. Assess your own woodworking ability honestly.

2. Choose a simpler project, such as a mirror frame or plant stand, if you are a relative newcomer to woodworking. Select an intermediate project, such as an end table or slatted bookcase, if you have some general experience in woodworking. Pick a more complex project, such as a dining table or an arts and craft hutch, if you are an experienced woodworker.

3. Read the list of materials required. Cut any pieces of wood needed, including top rails, bottom rails and large stiles. Purchase any other items required, such as mirror retainers, picture hangers, cabinet door cushions, leather and fabric.

4. Cut any joints required, such as mortise and tenon joints, lap joints and dovetail joints. Assemble joints using woodworking glue and clamp parts together. Pin or dowel joints as required. Wipe away excess glue and allow to dry.

5. Varnish or wax allow the grain to be seen and enjoyed.

Apply any handles and knobs, such as reproduction Stickley drawer pull handles. Sand and stain as required. Varnish or wax your piece rather than painting it to allow the grain of the wood and the joints to be seen.

Bunk Bed Assembly Instructions

Conserving floor space, convenience and fun are some of the attractive features of having a bunk bed. Children and adults alike use bunk beds and find them to be cozy, built-in niches to cuddle up into. Purchasing and assembling your own bunk bed is a straightforward, two-person job--once you get the heavy box into the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Tools and Parts

Lay out all the parts--the boards, bed frames, mattress slats, screws and bolts. Make sure everything is there, and if not, contact the company so that it can send you what's missing. Grab an allen wrench set or use the one in the package for its screws, and a Phillips screwdriver. You will also need wood glue, and have a hammer on hand, just in case you need to tap a few pieces into place.

Assembling the Frame

Assemble the bunk bed as close to its permanent location as possible. This will save you a lot of maneuvering later on. Attach the two sides of the bed frame to the headboard and footboard using very long screws. Put wood glue between the connections to prevent bed-frame squeaking. Do this first for the lower bed. Once the lower frame is secure and sturdy enough to stand on its own, start assembling the upper bed. Unless you have a few people to help you, assemble the upper bed on the floor instead of on the frame of the bottom bunk.

Mattress Support and Railings

For both beds, screw in place the mattress support slats inserted across the two sides of the bed frame. The holes are usually pre-drilled, but if not, follow the suggestions for how wide to space your mattress support slats. Attach the center slat first perpendicular to the bed frame--this will give the frame stability and support. Attach the next slats one at each end of the bed--at the footboard and at the headboard. Then evenly space and attach the rest of the mattress support slats.

Bunking the Beds

For one-piece bunk beds--beds that cannot be separated--the beds are already bunked. For two-piece, separable bunk beds, insert the large dowels into the holes located on the top of each post on the lower bed. It may not be a good idea to put wood glue in these holes if you intend to separate the beds at some point. Tap the dowels into place, and then align the holes at the bottom of the upper bed's posts onto these secured dowels. Push the upper bed down until all posts are secured.

The Ladder and Rails

Some bunk beds have removable ladders that simply hook onto the side of the upper bunk bed's railing. Others are secured to the bed framing with screws. Assemble the ladder by laying down the two ladder railings and lining up the ladder's treads with its screw and/or dowel holes. Pour wood glue into the holes, insert the dowels and screw each tread into place on both sides. Affix the ladder to the bunk bed with screws or hook it into place.

Line up the guardrails and screw these into the posts of the headboard and the footboard on both sides. Do not use wood glue, because one day you may want to disassemble the bunk bed arrangement and use the beds as two side-by-side twin beds.

Decorate A Colonial Style Home

Colonial decor

In the world of home decor, the term "Colonial" is most often used and attributed to the design period of the 18th century in America. The rich English Georgian decor came to the New World and became known as "American Colonial." Georgian decor elements, such as paint selections in earth tones and stylish fireplaces, translated to Colonial America by way of new home owners. The uniquely American style gave a comfortable, laid back feel to homes. If you are thinking about using this decorating style, follow these steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. The background colors of your home play a vital role in incorporating the colonial style. Paint your walls with earth tones of greens or blues. You also can choose a floral-patterned wallpaper for accent colors. To really create a flow in your home choose colors of a similar palette.

2. Add layers of warmth to your colonial style home by covering wooden and brick floors with area rugs. Choose rugs in warm rich colors that complement your walls. Popular choices are oriental-style rugs featuring a motif of birds or flowers.

3. Add lighting in keeping with the colonial style. Brass wall sconces with mirrored backs make beautiful lighting accents. Bring in floor lamps with colonial style shades to bring light to corners. Glass chandeliers are a beautiful genuine touch.

4. Bring fabrics into your home that reflect a traditional colonial style. Couches, chairs and throw pillow accents should complement your wall colors and pull together your color scheme. Consider adding simple plaids and splashes of bright color like royal red and blue.

5. Drapery styles for colonial homes are traditional tie-back draperies. Decorative touches like rich-looking tassels can be added to the tie backs.

Donate Used Wheelchairs

Many insurance and disability plans allow patients to purchase new wheelchairs on a regular basis. However, thousands of people in the United States who need wheelchairs are not insured and do not have access to low-cost wheelchairs. Donating used wheelchairs is an easy way to help people with disabilities save hundreds or thousands of dollars, not to mention a lot of frustration. Many organizations will pick up your old wheelchair or pay to ship the wheelchair at no cost to you.

Instructions

1. Find a donation location for your used wheelchair (see Resources). Some organizations operate statewide, while others are nationwide. Several organizations donate used wheelchairs internationally, and others keep the donations local.

2. Do not repair your broken or heavily used wheelchair before donation. Even if your wheelchair is broken or not in perfect condition, many organizations will repair the wheelchair at absolutely no cost to you or the recipient. These wheelchairs are called "refurbished," and they often look and work as good as new after the repairs.

3. Find events hosted in your state at which donated wheelchairs are accepted. Some cities hold wheelchair collection events, such as 1000 Wheels, hosted by Chariots of Hope. Some organizations also collect money to cover the repair costs for any broken or worn wheelchairs they receive.

Remodel A Tudorstyle Cottage

Timbered stucco is typical of Tudor homes.

Tudor style, which originated in the late medieval period in the United Kingdom, features half-timbered stucco exteriors, steeply pitched roofs, arched doorways, wall niches and diamond-pane and leaded-glass windows. This style, named for the Tudor monarchy, was frequently recreated in 1920s suburban America. These Tudor Revival homes and cottages, which can still be found in many mature American neighborhoods, have a charming and cozy look. If you are fortunate enough to own a Tudor cottage, maintaining the home's unique architectural character is key. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Dark, rich wood such as oak, mahogany, cherry or walnut was used in paneling and detailing in many Tudor cottages. Make the wood a focal point. If it has been painted over the years, strip it and give it a dark stain to restore its original look. Highlight half-timbered beams in the ceiling by painting the walls or ceiling around them a light color. Check under carpeting for original hardwood or tile flooring. Remove the carpeting and refinish the original floors.

2. Wrought iron is another prominent element of Tudor style. If your Tudor cottage's original lighting fixtures and door hardware have been stripped away, replace them with vintage iron pieces from antique stores or architectural salvage shops. Porch lights, mailboxes, chandeliers and sconces should have a hand-forged look. Other signature Tudor features include wrought-iron stair railings and fireplace accessories.

3. Hang large colorful tapestries on the walls to add texture, depth and warmth to your rooms. Place large oriental rugs throughout your home to add an extra layer of warmth, especially on cold days.

4. Play up your cottage's natural stone elements. If your Tudor has a large, imposing stone fireplace, make it a focal point by arranging furniture around it, hanging a large tapestry above it and placing pewter or iron candlesticks on the mantle.

5. Repeat motifs common in Tudor homes, such as the Tudor rose, the fleur de lis and the thistle. Use them in fabrics such as window treatments, linens and furniture upholstery.

Paneling Ideas For Home Walls

Paneling helps set the mood of a room.

Everyday use of wood paneling may be traced back to England at the the end of the 16th century. The damp English countryside was beautiful, but prone to homes with cold, damp walls. Homeowners began installing wood panels to the lower part of the walls, resulting in dryer, warmer rooms. When the panels themselves began to rot, they could easily be replaced by new panels. Paneling is still popular in homes, although for different reasons. Paneling adds richness and warmth to walls and helps set the mood of a room. There are styles designed to accent all architectural types. Does this Spark an idea?

Beadboard

Beadboard, a cost-effective wall covering, has historically been used in the less important rooms of the home, such as bedrooms and kitchens. It is a favorite wall covering in summer cottages, cementing its association with relaxed lifestyle.

Traditional

It is called "Traditional" for good reason. First appearing in homes in the 17th century, traditional paneling has been used in Georgian, Colonial, Federalist, Queen Anne and Shingle Style homes. The raised panel design has been used by nearly every great American designer of the last 300 years.

Modern

Minimalistic equals modern when it comes to wall paneling. The 20th century Modern movement produced the minimalistic, nearly-flush plane that creates an illusion of one, continuous surface. Varying the grain orientation produces distinctive geometric patterns. Modern paneling is well suited to gathering spaces, such as conference rooms and lobbies. It is perfect for homeowners who want the warmth of wood, but with a modern feel.

Classic American

Classic American paneling pays homage to the design innovations of the 19th and 20th centuries. An understated, sophisticated reaction to the ornate style of Victorian design, Classic American graces the walls of Shaker, Mission, Craftsman and Prairie style homes. The flat panels of Classic American are most commonly used in gathering spaces of the home, such as the living room, den and dining room.

Cottage

The coziness of cottage paneling makes it the perfect choice for smaller rooms, such as bedrooms, and a natural choice for informal gathering areas, such as the kitchen or family room. Cottage paneling combines two classic paneling types, traditional and beadboard. This combination produces a casual style that honors architectural styles from the late 17th to the early 20th centuries.

Rustic

Rustic paneling can be traced back to the English Arts and Crafts Movement. As the 20th century was born, Americans became attracted to the idea of simple, hand-crafted paneling to complement their Prairie, Mission and Shingle style homes. Rustic paneling is used in vacation homes, lodges and inns.

About Millionaires Who Give Away Money

Some give money away for tax purposes.

Whether for tax benefits, because of personal tragedy or just from having a heart of gold, many millionaires give away money. Some have given away nearly everything they own, while others manage to give while still maintaining their personal wealth. Either way, it's fascinating when millionaires give away their money, and the rest of us imagine what we would do if we were in the same position.

Significance

Millionaires who give away money have the power to change hundreds of lives or make a significant impact in a community. While small donations certainly add up and also make an important difference, when a millionaire gives away money, there is usually an immediate result. The donated money can have long-term effects, such as sending students to college, providing homes and food for the less fortunate, or giving someone in unfortunate circumstances a "leg up." In many cases, those who have benefited from the money go on to become successful and in turn donate their time or money, continuing the work set in motion by the millionaire.

Types

Millionaires who give away money do it for a variety of reasons or a combination of reasons. These donations may be made for tax relief purposes. In this way, wealthy individuals can have a more direct say in how their money is used, and it also benefits a nonprofit organization. Some millionaires give money away because they have been affected in a personal way by a disease or situation. For example, a millionaire with a family member diagnosed with breast cancer is likely to give away money to help with cancer research or that helps breast cancer victims afford treatment. Some millionaires give money to those in less fortunate circumstances because they believe it is the right thing to do. They recognize that they have been fortunate and have the ability to help others.

Effects

When a millionaire gives, the donation tends to snowball. Not only are others encouraged to give more, the purchasing power of the organization or recipient increases, which makes all of the donated dollars go further. In addition, retailers and suppliers like to get in on the act when a well-known millionaire donates, and stores or manufacturers will often donate products and services to go along with a millionaire's donation. A wealthy donor may also provide the seed money for a fund-raising event, paying for advertising, space rental and other costs associated with a fundraiser, making every dollar stretch even more.

Considerations

Before a millionaire gives away money, he will often investigate the organization he intends to donate to and carefully consider how the money will be used. Like everyone else, he wants to be sure that the money will be used for its intended purpose and that it will be spent carefully. The amount of tax saved through donation is also a popular consideration, as is who will actually benefit from the money.

Misconceptions

While the rare few millionaires who give away nearly everything they have should be recognized for their generous nature, there is a common misconception that those who maintain their wealth don't give as much. By maintaining their wealth, millionaires who give only a portion of their income are able to continue to give year after year and often in greater and greater amounts. Over a lifetime, a millionaire who holds on to his wealth is likely to give far more than a millionaire who gave everything she had.

Craftsman Style Bathroom Flooring Ideas

Craftsman style is a distinct style of home that became popular in the early 20th century during the "Arts and Crafts Movement." Craftsman style homes are simple, modest, typically bungalow style homes, that are accented with beautiful woodwork and architectural design. They have low, gabled roofs and wide front porches with tapered columns. Inside a Craftsman style home you will find clean lines and mostly natural materials, such as wood, natural stone, and brick used in the design. If you are remodeling your Craftsman style bathroom and want to stay true to the original design, there are several flooring options that you can choose. All of these flooring ideas will be consistent with the timeless style of these homes, while adding a beautiful, updated look. Does this Spark an idea?

Wood

Craftsman style homes are known for having an abundance of natural materials. This style of home generally used wood flooring throughout the home, with the exception of the bathroom. Moisture issues in the bathroom caused builders of these homes to choose other options, such as natural stone. Nowadays, because of all of the advances in flooring production you can use wood style flooring. A wide plank, wood laminate floor is an that mimics the look of the natural, rustic feel of these homes, but can withstand moisture. Generally, Craftsman style wood floors were made of oak or fir, and usually finished in a dark stain. There are many manufacturers of wood flooring products that sell products specifically made to mimic the Craftsman style.

Natural Stone

Craftsman style homes used natural products in the building of these homes. So it is not uncommon to find natural stones such as slate used in the bathroom. Natural stone tiles are an excellent choice for the bathroom because they withstand water very well. The downside is that stone can be very expensive. There are synthetic and composite tiles that look and feel like natural stone without the cost.

Ceramic Tile

Tile manufacturers produce distinct colors and designs associated with this era's style. The finishes on these products tend to be extremely glossy and can be accented with intricate edging, borders, and designs. It was not uncommon to find glossy, white tiles on the floor and walls and white fixtures throughout a Craftsman home. This produced the clean lines and simple designs that the style is known for. Decorative tiles were also used throughout Craftsman style homes, and could be incorporated into the bathroom flooring to add a little artistic flair to this simply styled home.

Traditional Wall Units

A traditional wall unit serves as a media center in a family room.

The decorative characteristics of traditional furniture span several design eras. Wall units fabricated in traditional style have the look and feel of an antique piece, while authentic, traditional wall units can easily become heirloom treasures in home design. Besides traditional furniture elements, traditional also applies to the usual function of wall units as large furniture pieces coordinated with the decor theme of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

The Traditional Style

"Traditional" denotes what was common yesterday, and it becomes a broad term defining anything that's not contemporary. "Traditional" also transcends what would be customary among people and in particular places, even if the style is rather new. And so the style of a traditional wall unit could be of a particular influence, such as French, English, Gregorian, or even the Shaker and Mission influences.

Common decorative features used to dress up a traditional wall unit include arches, turned legs, claw feet and intricately carved wooden molding and accents. These features might display a single design influence or might be an expression of several traditional styles in one furniture piece. Traditional wall units might be authentic, original pieces or replicas of an old piece of furniture.

For Display

One of the main functions of a traditional wall unit is to display home decor. The unit's open shelving makes ideal, protected settings for fine collectibles, souvenirs, vases and one-of-a-kind pieces as an alternative to leaving them packed away in storage. Plants often are placed on its open shelves for visually interesting color and texture.

For Book Storage

Books occupy a lot of space, but easily find a suitable home in a traditional wall unit. Using the shelf space offered by the wall unit can be as simple as lining the shelves with the books or arranging them in stacked groupings that look like accent decor themselves. When the display shelves house books along with decorative accent pieces, they enhance the appearance of the unit. A mix of book spines that attract onlookers toward the wall unit can make the room feel as though it's a comfortable place to curl up with a book.

Multimedia Housing

Traditional wall units make an ideal location for multimedia equipment. Newer replicas of traditional wall units feature compartments for the equipment and some are even outfitted with electrical, cable and internet connections. The center of the wall unit is dedicated to the TV, and side compartments with open shelves and closing cabinet doors are designed to house stereo, computer and gaming equipment.

Even authentic, traditional wall units have ample shelving to house current multimedia pieces. Especially for models with adjustable shelving, the space offered by the wall unit is suitable for any piece of equipment along with the other book and decorative items stored on the wall unit.

Traditional Placements

The placement of a traditional wall unit is in itself a tradition. Wall units function best in a living room, dining room as a china cabinet, family room, den, library, multipurpose space or an office. Because it's typically large, traditional wall units are not used in bedrooms unless the room is also large and serves several purposes. In each of these rooms, the scale of the wall unit easily makes it the focal point or one of the focal points of the space.

Dining Room Furniture Styles

Select a dining room set to match your style.

Nineteen waves of furniture styles have left their mark on dining rooms over the past four centuries. Most of what you'll find in a furniture store today still mimics one of its predecessor movements, from the Jacobean style in the 1600s to the Scandinavian contemporary, first introduced in the 1960s. While antique collectors may scour the country for priceless originals, the modern remakes of certain historic periods remain the most sought-after furniture in dining room design today. Does this Spark an idea?

Mission or Arts and Crafts (1880 to 1910)

Best known for its simple, clean lines, mission style furniture features little detail or ornamentation, relying solely on straight posts as a decoration. Traditionally, the arts and crafts movement represents large, heavy wooden furniture in a medium-color stain. Most dining room sets include a serving sideboard with iron hardware and matching posts and legs. Chairs have ladder or slat backs in a rectangular or square shape with a straight and slightly tapered leg. Often, the chair seats are wood, but occasionally they're available in a leather or canvas upholstery.

Duncan Phyfe (1795 to 1848)

Originally named after the cabinetmaker, Duncan Phyfe, this style of dining room furniture is renowned for its graceful, delicate look achieved with carved legs and neoclassic motifs carved in the designs of a leaf, circle, arrow or drapery. Chairs from this period have upholstered seats in a myriad of fabrics and patterns and the chair backs are most often carved in an x-mark or scroll pattern. The dark-stained wood is usually a selection of walnut, satinwood, rosewood, fruitwood, maple or cherry.

Victorian (1840 to 1910)

Victorian-style dining room furniture is crafted from a heavy dark wood with Gothic-inspired molding in a scroll or foliage motif. Each piece of the dining room set boasts detailed carvings, adding to the formal and somber look. Curvy-backed upholstered chairs and a massive china hutch compliment the molding and trim on the table. Some styles include grates in front of the glass on the china cabinet.

Contemporary (1960 to 1990)

Sometimes referred to as Scandinavian contemporary, this utilitarian style of furniture first surfaced between 1960 and 1990, inspired by Danish and Scandinavian designers. The natural-stained furniture is constructed in simple, straight lines from a pale wood like ash, pine or birch. Chair backs feature a flat rail at top and a polished wood seat without upholstery. Hardware and drawer pulls are traditionally constructed from wood in square shapes.

Visit Red Square In Moscow

The Red Square gates and the State History museum

Red Square is a premiere Moscow destination. Located adjacent to the Kremlin with origins over eight hundred years old, Red Square can be more easily grasped by approaching it directionally. From the northern entrance, Saint Basil’s Cathedral is directly toward the south, and to the west, Vladimir Lenin’s Tomb; a black, marbled, unobtrusive tomb with his name etched in stone. To the east is GUM Department Store; a three story shopping mall-like structure pleasing with its open air feel of fountains and sky lights. Between the gates and GUM is the Kazan Cathedral, painted eye-catching red and trimmed in pink. Between GUM and Saint Basil’s is a circular area, stone walled and only a few feet high. This area is the place Ivan the Terrible used for capital punishment or the chopping of the heads.

Instructions

1. Fly into any of the Moscow International Airports. Fares won’t differ much. Hotel choice should include transport to and from the airport. Otherwise, hire taxis or take full advantage of the Moscow Metro.

2. Explore the State History Museum, which is the dominant structure of brownish red located between the main gates. With the exception of the Kremlin, this museum houses impressive artifacts from Moscow’s vibrant 800 year history and even before.

3. Visit Kazan Cathedral, painted in bright red with pink trim and located past the main gates to the left. The interior has brilliant gold flaked paintings of the saints and ornate architecture throughout.

4. Shop at GUM Department Store. The impressive pre-revolution building includes many levels of high end boutiques, jewelry stores and places offering exquisite Russian gifts.

5. Visit Ivan the Terrible’s execution block. A circular stone fence encloses raised area where it’s easy to imagine the discolored stones to be centuries old blood.

6. Take the Saint Basil’s Cathedral Tour. For a minimal admission charge, a visitor can explore the outer halls and castle-like stairwells. It is rumored that all the gold of Russia was stored here and protected.

7. Make inquiries about Lenin’s Tomb. It may be closed indefinitely, but in the past officials did open the tomb for public viewing with the lines stretching endlessly.

8. Visit on a Sunday. Sundays are usually a happening day at Red Square and the Kremlin since many brides and grooms choose that day and place to marry. It’s not uncommon to see several dozen wedding gowns dotting the square.

9. Watch the changing of the guard in front of the square. Like many world powers that honor their fallen anonymous comrades, Russia is no exception. Incorporating two glass guard shacks and an eternal flame, the tomb demands solemn respect as three soldiers march in lock step.

10. Stay at area hotels that are accessible by the Moscow Metro. Moscow has an overabundance of traffic problems. Despite the language barrier, the Metro is easy to navigate and will be less stressful, saving some money.

11. Research restaurants with popular Russian fare and allow your taste buds to adjust. Many visitors like the familiarity of American food. In the courtyard before Red Square, Manezh Mall, located underground, offers many recognizable dining options. Don’t expect all the conveniences of home though. At some restaurants (pectopah’s) ice is a commodity. Beer and soda may not be cold.

Restore Old Oak Furniture

Save money by restoring old oak furniture instead of buying new pieces.

Part of the beauty of having old oak furniture is being able to refinish damaged finishes and tighten joints to restore the furniture to a visually appealing and useful state. Turning a yard sale find or grandma's hand-me down into an attractive addition to the home is possible with a little work. Old oak furniture offers desirable wood grains and generally good furniture craftsmanship. Refurbishing old oak furniture is less expensive than buying new furniture, making restoration a wise decision. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set the old oak furniture in the workspace. Remove all hardware including drawer pulls, knobs and decorations.

2. Equip an orbital palm sander or sanding block with 120-grit sandpaper and sand the old finish off the furniture. Sand legs, spindles and other rounded pieces or curves by hand. Turn the furniture over to sand the underside.

3. Wipe all of the furniture surfaces with a tack cloth to remove the dust and debris. Vacuum the dust and debris from the work area with a shop vacuum.

4. Equip the palm sander or sanding block with 220-grit sandpaper and sand all of the surfaces of the furniture a second time, following the direction of the wood grain. Wipe the furniture with a tack cloth and vacuum the work area with a shop vacuum. Sand the furniture in the direction of the wood grain a third time with 320-grit sandpaper using a palm sander or sanding block. Wipe the furniture with a tack cloth and vacuum the work area again.

5. Examine all of the furniture joints to determine if they are loose or wobbly. If a joint is loose, add wood glue and clamp the joint to hold it firmly in place. If the joint is dangerously loose, remove the joint, sand off the old adhesive, apply wood glue, put the joint back in place and clamp it with a hand-screw-clamp. Let the wood glue dry for four to six hours.

6. Check the surface for scratches, deep gouges or chips. Fill in damaged areas with wood filler. Let the wood filler dry for two to three hours. Sand the wood with 320-grit sandpaper to make the repair flush with the existing surface. Wipe the surface with a tack cloth.

7. Dip a small section of a clean, lint-free rag into a gel wood stain, if you desire a color other than natural oak. Wipe off excess stain on the edge of the stain can. Place the rag on the edge of the furniture and wipe the stain onto the surface in one smooth motion, following the wood grain from one side to the other side of the furniture. Do not move the staining rag back and forth over the area; only move in one direction. Continue to dip the rag into the stain, remove excess stain and wipe the stain across the furniture until stain covers all surfaces. Let the stain dry for three to four hours. Turn the furniture over and stain parts of the furniture that were out of sight using the same method as you did for the rest of the piece.

8. Continue to add layers of stain until you reach your desired depth of color. Let the final coat of stain dry overnight.

9. Sand the oak furniture surface lightly with 400-grit sandpaper, following the wood grain. Wipe the surface with a tack cloth.

10. Dip a foam applicator into polyurethane and apply two to three coats, allowing each coat to dry for three to four hours.

Reupholster A Dining Chair Seat

Reupholstering a dining chair seat is easier than you might think.

You may be thinking about reupholstering a dining chair seat or several dining room chairs to match the decor that is currently in your dining room. Reupholstering a dining room chair is easier than you think and it only takes a half hour or so. Here's reupholster a dining chair seat: Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the seat from the dining chair.

2. Remove the existing upholstery from the dining chair seat. This step is optional since it sometimes involves removing the padding underneath. It is perfectly fine to put the new fabric over the old when reupholstering a dining room chair.

3. Measure the dining chair seat and cut the fabric to size for reupholstering. Be sure to allow for at least 4-6 inches to wrap around the back of the seat.

4. Lay the fabric wrong side up on a flat surface. Place the dining chair seat on top of it (bottom up), aligning the pattern as necessary.

5. Fold one side over and staple it to the back of the dining chair seat. Be sure not to staple over the screw holes. Repeat this step until all four sides and corners of the seat are stapled. Pleat the corners for best results during reupholstering.

6. Place the reupholstered dining chair seat back into the dining chair and screw it back in.

How Much To Put New Vinyl Siding On A 14 X 70

Vinyl siding, a polymer or plastic made from polyvinyl chloride, can last for many years. Manufacturers of vinyl siding often adhere to the American Society for Testing and Materials standards for manufacturing the product. Local and state jurisdictions use ASTM standards voluntarily to develop building and inspection codes. Does this Spark an idea?

Building Permit

Many local jurisdictions require a permit to perform extensive work to the outside of a home, which includes putting on new vinyl siding. To obtain a permit, contact the local building inspection office and fill out the required paperwork. The permit costs a fee, which varies by each jurisdiction.

Cost

Vinyl siding is generally sold in long, vertical pieces. At the time of publication, contractors were charging between $2 and $7 per square foot, based on the sidings exterior square footage. Siding on a mobile home is approximately 10 feet tall. To estimate the cost of the vinyl siding, you'll need to add the square footage of all four sides of the trailer. Assuming your trailer's outside walls are 10 feet high, you'll have 140-square-foot trailer ends and 700-square-foot sides, for a total of 1,680 square feet. The cost to put in new vinyl siding on a 14 x 70 trailer cost ranges, at the time of publication, would start just above $3,000 and climb to $12,000 or more.

Additional Costs

Installing new vinyl siding requires removing existing siding and purchasing other fixtures such as soffits and corner panels. Other fixtures including outside faucets and vents are removed, reinstalled or replaced. Removing old siding and insulation requires renting a trash disposal container to haul away and dispose of the old siding. Contractors generally charge additional fees for these supplies and services. Additional costs average $1,000 to $3,000.

Considerations

Whether you choose to do the work yourself or hire a contractor, include all of the costs and time required to completing the project. Receive detailed estimates from contractors to ensure all costs are included. Contractors with extensive experience can give a general cost per square foot based on the labor, time and supplies required to do the job, but they should nevertheless supply detailed information. Ask each contractor for references from customers who had similar projects completed by the contractor. Call each reference to ensure the contractor did those jobs satisfactorily.

Decorate A Easter Bulletin Board

Decorate a Easter Bulletin Board

Next Easter, decorate your bulletin board when you add festive springtime decor to the rest of your home. A bulletin board can be a focal point of a room, and decorating it will brighten up the space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint a wooden bulletin board in a fresh Easter shade, such as pastel pink, blue, yellow or green. You can paint the perimeter of the board in one solid color, or paint each side a different color for a cheery look.

2. Using push pins, hang Easter-inspired decor from the bulletin board. Buy Easter ornaments, in shapes such as eggs, bunnies, candy and chicks. You can also create your own hanging decor by drawing shapes on construction paper and cutting them out. Punch a hole in the top and tie a string through it.

3. Liven up a boring bulletin board by gluing dried or fake flowers around the perimeter of it. Add a touch of spring by buying fake flowers in a variety of colors, or drying a few favorite blossoms from your garden.

4. For a festive look, cover the bulletin board with a piece of pastel-colored wrapping paper. Cut large letters out of construction paper, and pin messages on the board, such as "Happy Easter" or "Welcome spring."

5. Create a memory collage on the bulletin board using pictures from past Easters. Sort through favorite family photos and hang images that remind you of the great times your family has shared during past holidays.

Plant Fig Trees In Georgia

Several varieties of figs are perfect to grow in Georgia.

Planting a fig tree in your backyard allows you to pick fresh figs that can be used in desserts, salads and breads. To ensure that the fig tree you plant will thrive, select a fig variety that is recommended for Georgia's climate. Conadria, Celeste and Hardy Chicago are recommended by the University of Georgia for the middle and northern part of Georgia, while three three varieties are joined by Alma, Brown Turkey, Green Ischia, Hunt, Kadota, LSU Purple and Magnolia as viable strains in the southern portion of the state. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Contact your county extension office to get instructions for sampling the soil for root-knot nematodes and the soil pH. The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5. Adjust a low pH by spreading dolomitic limestone in the planting area.

2. Till a 6-foot by 6-foot area for each fig tree to a depth of 8 inches. Till to a depth of 16 inches for badly compacted and clay soils that may be found in parts of Georgia.

3. Prune one-third off the top of bare-root fig trees if it wasn't pruned at the nursery. You don't need to prune the tops off of fig trees grown in containers before planting.

4. Dig a hole three times bigger than the diameter of the root ball and 4 inches deeper than it was planted at the nursery. Slant the sides of the hole at a 45-degree angle.

5. Form dirt in the middle of the planting hole into a pedestal to set the fig tree on. Tamp the dirt with your hands as you make the pedestal to make it firm.

6. Cut the container down the side and remove it from around the tree's root ball. Remove any wrapping, wire or bindings from the tree.

7. Break up the soil around the roots. Set the fig tree on top of the pedestal. Spread the roots out in the hole, down the sides of the pedestal.

8. Backfill the hole around the tree with the soil you dug out. Tamp the soil gently with your hands as you go, to prevent air pockets.

9. Water the area around the tree thoroughly to settle the soil and get rid of any air pockets around the roots.

Vintage Types Of Bedroom Vanities

A vanity gives your bedroom a place to get ready and select accessories and make up.

A bedroom vanity gives your sleeping quarters an element of romantic whimsy and a functional place designated for fix your hair, put on make up and try on accessories. Bedroom vanities generally consist of a mirror, often attached to a small table containing a couple of drawers, and a stool or small bench. Selecting a vintage vanity instantly adds a period atmosphere to your room. There are several vintage styles of furniture for you to choose from. Does this Spark an idea?

Victorian-Style Vanity

Victorian vanities are largely made of wood in ornate styles that are certain to attract attention and add a definitively old-fashioned feel to your room. Vanity styles in the mid-Victorian period from around 1845 to 1865 were wooden--rosewood, mahogany or walnut were the most common. Vanity tables had cabriole legs and the wood often displayed detailed carvings of leaves, flowers or fruit. The tops of the vanity tables had round or oval shapes. Victorian-style vanities toward the end of the Victorian period from approximately 1860 to 1880 consisted of the same types of wood as used earlier but included chestnut as well. You can expect a vanity from this period to have turned and fluted legs, intricate carvings and crests and possibly marble tops. Elaborately carved brass or bronze drawers pulls also abounded in this style.

Art Deco Vanity

Art deco furniture features clean lines, a minimal amount of added adornment and often geometric shapes. According to Victoriana.com, "This furniture style was derived from an historic Paris exposition in 1925 that celebrated the marriage of art and industry in rejection of art nouveau." Vanities of this style consist of a range of materials such as high-polished wood or stainless steel. Such vanities often have sensuous curves in the legs and corners of the table, and the frame of the mirror and scalloped surfaces that make strong yet subtle lines and ridges. Such vanities may also contain carvings or inlaid designs of starbursts, sunbursts or chevrons. All in all, this style of vanity has a very glamorous look and feel to it.

Mission-Style Vanity

The Mission-style of furniture emerged out of the English arts and crafts movement at the end of the 1800s. The style embraces simplicity, celebrating the beauty of straight lines and no excessive adornments. Mission-style vanities possess tables and stools with very straight, bare legs and sharp, right angles made out of dark wood. Square spindles and an emphasis on flat planes are also present in this decor style. The tables and chairs of vanities of this style often contain supporting spindles that make bold, yet understated parallel lines.

Identify Windsor Antique Rocking Chairs

Windsor rocking chairs may have originated near Windsor castle, hence the name.

Windsor rocking chairs, which originated in England during the 1740s, are characterized by a bow-spindled back. The chairs were originally intended for use in the garden and were made in many types of wood. Windsor chairs were introduced to the U.S. colonies in the 1750s and soon evolved into different variations on the Windsor chair. There are a few methods to identify an antique Windsor rocking chair.

Instructions

1. Look for the original Windsor design, which was characterized by a back frame that was bent into a hoop. The legs were splayed slightly with pegs inserted directly into the seat of the chair.

2. Learn about other Windsor designs, including a rounded hoop back, horizontal pieces of wood across the spindles, a comb-shaped back and flat spindles on the back.

3. Look at images of antique Windsor rocking chairs in order to best identify them in person. There are images online on websites, such as DesignBoom.com, or in books, such as "The Rocker: An American Design Tradition" by Bernice Steinbaum, which contains pictures of American variations on the Windsor. Books on antique rocking chairs can be bought at book stores or online or borrowed from your local library.

4. Search for antique Windsor rocking chairs that are painted green or black. These were the first colors the chairs were painted. Each color indicates the chair is likely an antique Windsor.

5. Look for Windsor chairs that are weathered and have been exposed to the elements. As the first Windsor chairs were commonly placed in the garden, remaining chairs are quite worn.

Restaurants Managed By The Homeless In Seattle

FareStart offers free culinary training to the homeless.

The city of Seattle uses an out-of-the-box approach to helping its homeless population. From the homeless-run and distributed publication "Real Change" to user-managed shelters, involving the homeless in the organizations that seek to help them is a Seattle tradition. Taking the model to a new level is the culinary training and work-placement program, FareStart. Not only does FareStart train the homeless in culinary arts, it serves as a fine dining restaurant that gives the homeless a chance to make a living while they learn a craft.

Organization

The FareStart mission is a "culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals."

This model places disadvantaged participants in the driver's seat, allowing them to skip demoralizing handouts and earn a fee for a service rendered. All proceeds from the restaurant go back to the organization and help to maintain the program and fill the needs of its participants.

Hours and Fare

Save for weekly Thursday dinner services, FareStart is open Monday through Friday for lunch only. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu changes, but soup, salads and sandwiches are constants and salmon is always on the menu. Make sure to ask about the daily special.

Guest Chef Night

Every Thursday, a local chef hosts a special dinner service. Reservations are helpful and the need grows with the popularity of the visiting chef. Dinner service consists of three courses, designed and planned by the guest chef and prepared by the students. As of June 2010, the cost is $24.95 per person.

How Fix A Recliner Chair

A squeaky, broken or sticking recliner in your home is a nuisance and can make the chair go from comfortable to downright annoying. You can check a few things on the chair and attempt to repair it before tossing it out, bringing it back to the furniture store, or calling a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine what is wrong with your recliner. Is it squeaky? Does it feel broken or stuck? If it is squeaky, figure out where the noises are coming from. Lubricate the mechanisms with WD-40 to help stop the noise and improve the fluidity of the recliner's operation.

2. Tighten screws, nuts, bolts and handle (which operates the footrest) with a screwdriver or wrench. These can become big problems when loose or wobbly. They can cause the chair to feel broken when you are reclining in it, or may cause a popping sound from the weight of the friction adjustment. If any screws, nuts or bolts are missing, purchase the size you need and replace them.

3. Check the positions of the recliner to see if all of them (feet up and back reclined, feet up and back straight, etc. ) still work in a fluid motion. If they don't, something may be wrong with the tension mechanism in the chair. You can find these mechanisms at a hardware store.

4. Check out the base of the recliner. If it is metal, it will be much more difficult to repair than if it is wood. See if the metal has broken hinges anywhere, or if it is rubbing against another metal bar. Sometimes a base can break permanently if too much weight is put on the recliner, or if it is used roughly.

You can repair a wooden base with wood glue and some new parts, or even just some wood glue and a clamp to hold a piece in place. If you have to replace the entire base, choose a sturdy wooden one that will be easier to maintain and repair next time.

5. Check the handle mechanism if the footrest refuses to come out of the chair. Make sure it is screwed on tightly and securely. If that is not the problem, try to pull out the footrest manually and search under it for loose or scraggly pieces. The bending arms on the footrest may need some lubrication or tightening.

Siding Colors For Craftsman Homes

Original colors on wood-sided Craftsman homes emphasized colors seen in nature more than anything else.

Historic American Craftsman homes are found in many parts of the country and especially in California. Craftsman homes are a product of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, which began in the 1890s and lasted until the 1930s. Craftsman-style homes featured an array of locally built materials and interior and exterior colors. Craftsman homes emphasized exterior colors that were originally meant to harmonize with their surroundings. Original exterior colors of wood-sided or clapboard Craftsman homes were mostly composed of natural earthy tones. Does this Spark an idea?

Siding Colors

American Craftsman home exteriors were made of brick or wood. Typically, wooden exteriors on Craftsman homes featured different types of wood siding. Wood-sided Craftsman homes were painted in a palette of natural-toned colors that included reddish browns, browns, greens and soft blues and grays. One emphasis of painting a wood-sided Craftsman home should be to select colors that enable it to match up well with the surrounding scenery.

Color Matching

Craftsman homes near trees, rolling green grass and other natural woodland scenery are typically painted in shades of brown or green. Matching a classic Craftsman home color to its scenery is always an effective color matching tactic. For example, Craftsman homes located in open, airy spaces or near the sea match well when they're painted in soft blues or soft grays, which, for Craftsman homes includes shades of slate or limestone and even light blues.

Complementary Colors

Craftsman home exterior colors feature contrasting colors on windows and corners.

Many wood-sided Craftsman bungalow homes feature horizontal siding and vertical-sided corners along with wooden exterior windows, which should be painted in colors that complement the siding. Often, white or a lighter or darker shade of the color covering a Craftsman home's siding makes for a good complementary color. The Arts & Crafts Society website uses a 1916 catalog to show that Craftsman homes used a palette of complementary shades of colors for exteriors.

Color Strategies

Any color scheme on a wood-sided Craftsman home will work as long as it fits in with the landscape or neighboring houses. If you have a neighborhood Craftsman home, matching up with colors of other homes on the block is also a good color selection strategy. If you're performing a historic restoration of a Craftsman-era home, stick with traditional color palettes. If you're not painting your Craftsman home in original color palettes, though, feel free to paint it in any desired color.

The History Of Wolfgang Puck

Before the celebrity-studded restaurants, before the frozen pizza franchise, there was Wolfgang Puck the man and enterprising chef. From a humble childhood in Austria to worldwide fame, a colorful history surrounds Puck and his amazing successes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Early Years

Wolfgang Puck learned the basics of the culinary arts while standing at the side of his mother in their home kitchen. She was not only the family cook but a professional chef. She saw her son's potential and enrolled him in culinary school at the age of 14. He trained amongst the world's best dining establishments, notably Maxim's in Paris and L'Oustau de Baumaniere in Provence, which has a three-star rating from Michelin.

Moving to America

As a young adult, Puck made the move from Europe to the United States. He worked in Indianapolis from 1973 through 1975. But it was his subsequent move to Los Angeles, in 1975, that marked a turning point in Puck's career. Puck's signature style and charm wowed the Hollywood elite, and he soon was a partial owner of West Hollywood's Ma Maison. Puck's innovations with traditional recipes and fusion styles soon made Ma Maison the go-to place for gourmands in-the-know.

Innovations

The classic features of Wolfgang Puck's early culinary efforts were the groundbreaking elements of California cuisine. Puck was able to reproduce French and Italian recipes that had a twist involving local, seasonal produce. These innovations were the underpinnings of the celebrated Spago restaurant, which Puck opened in 1982. His signature smoked salmon and caviar pizzas and Sonoma lamb served with braised greens and rosemary earned the chef accolades.

Success and Expansion

Wolfgang Puck was not one to rest on his laurels. After winning two awards from the James Beard Foundation, Puck opened another restaurant, called Chinois. The chef had different goals with Chinois, hoping to create an Asian-fusion menu. A few years later, in 1989, he opened Postrio in San Francisco. Postrio marked a return to Puck's initial devotion to California cuisine, featuring a menu filled with local bounty.

Potential

Wolfgang Puck is one of the few chefs that has managed to become a successful brand. His name sells everything from frozen pizza to gourmet food (at gourmet prices) at the Las Vegas version of Spago, in Caesar's Forum Shops. The enterprising chef has set up three independent entities that look after his interests, Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, Wolfgang Puck Worldwide Inc. and Wolfgang Puck Catering.
